Celebrating International Women’s Day and Improving Heart Care for Women

International Women’s Day on Sunday 8th March we are celebrating the extraordinary achievements of women across society, including the many women working throughout healthcare who care for patients, lead services, and drive innovation every day.

It is also an important opportunity to recognise areas where healthcare must continue to improve, including inequalities in cardiovascular care for women.

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death for women in the UK, yet research shows women can experience longer delays between their first medical consultation for possible coronary disease and definitive cardiac investigation compared with men.

Improving awareness of these differences is essential to ensuring that women receive the same timely diagnosis and evidence-based care as men.

If you are experiencing ongoing symptoms that concern you, or would like to discuss your heart health, our team of highly experienced cardiologists is here to help.

Early assessment can make a real difference - you can contact the Peninsula Heart Clinic through our website to arrange a consultation with one of our specialists.

Important: Our clinic is not an emergency service. If you are experiencing symptoms that may suggest a heart attack, you should call 999 immediately.

We’re proud to celebrate an exciting milestone at Peninsula Heart Clinic — the introduction of Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF).

This next-generation technology represents a significant step forward in cardiac electrophysiology, delivering:

✔️ Faster procedure times
✔️ Efficient first-pass pulmonary vein isolation
✔️ Seamless integration with our existing mapping systems
✔️ Increased Cath lab capacity, helping us treat more patients sooner

Most importantly, PFA allows us to continue improving patient outcomes while reducing waiting times for those living with AF.

This achievement reflects the strength of collaboration between our clinical teams and NHS partners, and the dedication of everyone involved in bringing innovative care to our community.

We’re excited to offer this advanced therapy to our patients and look forward to continuing to lead in cutting-edge cardiac care.

Monday 5th May is World Hand Hygiene Day!

It’s hard to believe, but there was a time when handwashing wasn’t part of healthcare.

That changed thanks to pioneers like Ignaz Semmelweis and Florence Nightingale, who bravely challenged convention and proved that clean hands save lives. Their vision laid the groundwork for the modern standards of care we benefit from today.

Since then, hand hygiene has become a cornerstone of medicine - reducing infections, protecting patients, and saving countless lives every day.
From operating rooms to outpatient clinics, the simple act of cleaning hands has driven massive progress in healthcare outcomes around the world.

At the Peninsula Heart Clinic, we honour that legacy by upholding the highest standards of infection prevention and patient safety.

From advanced cardiac diagnostics to life-saving interventions, our team puts clean hands and clean care at the heart of everything we do.

Today, on ODP Day 2024 we celebrate the invaluable work of Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) worldwide, who are instrumental in ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. From preparing operating rooms to assisting surgeons and monitoring patients, ODPs play a crucial role in the operating theatre.

To shed light on the contributions of ODPs, we had the privilege of interviewing one of our own, Catherine Smith who works in our Plymouth unit – Peninsula Heart Clinic. Here's what she had to say:

Q: What inspired you to become an Operating Department Practitioner?
"I've always been drawn to the fast-paced environment of the operating theatre and the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. The idea of being part of a team that ensures patients receive the best care possible during surgery motivated me to pursue a career as an ODP."

Q: What do you find most rewarding about your role as an ODP?
"The most rewarding aspect is seeing patients safely through their surgical journey. Whether it's providing reassurance before a procedure, assisting during surgery, or ensuring patients are comfortable through recovery, knowing that I've played a part in their care is incredibly fulfilling."

Q: What message would you like to share with your fellow ODPs on this special day?
"To all my fellow ODPs, I want to express my admiration and gratitude for the incredible work you do day in and day out. Your dedication, expertise, and compassion make a world of difference to patients and their families. Let's continue to support each other and strive for excellence in our profession."

From Regent's Park Healthcare we would like to thank ODPs for their dedication, expertise, and compassion. Have a great ODP day!
