Today, on ODP Day 2024 we celebrate the invaluable work of Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) worldwide, who are instrumental in ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. From preparing operating rooms to assisting surgeons and monitoring patients, ODPs play a crucial role in the operating theatre.
To shed light on the contributions of ODPs, we had the privilege of interviewing one of our own, Catherine Smith who works in our Plymouth unit – Peninsula Heart Clinic. Here's what she had to say:
Q: What inspired you to become an Operating Department Practitioner?
"I've always been drawn to the fast-paced environment of the operating theatre and the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. The idea of being part of a team that ensures patients receive the best care possible during surgery motivated me to pursue a career as an ODP."
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your role as an ODP?
"The most rewarding aspect is seeing patients safely through their surgical journey. Whether it's providing reassurance before a procedure, assisting during surgery, or ensuring patients are comfortable through recovery, knowing that I've played a part in their care is incredibly fulfilling."
Q: What message would you like to share with your fellow ODPs on this special day?
"To all my fellow ODPs, I want to express my admiration and gratitude for the incredible work you do day in and day out. Your dedication, expertise, and compassion make a world of difference to patients and their families. Let's continue to support each other and strive for excellence in our profession."
From Regent's Park Healthcare we would like to thank ODPs for their dedication, expertise, and compassion. Have a great ODP day!
