Patients in the Paediatric Children’s Emergency Department will benefit from the donation of two Buzzy Devices. A Buzzy, is a bee-shaped tool that uses vibration and cold to distract children and reduce needle pain, helping to make medical procedures less distressing for young patients.

The devices were donated by construction company, Willmott Dixon who have been awarded the contract to build the new Emergency Care Building for University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) . They are already making a tangible difference to patient care through a joint Social Value strategy with the Trust.

The two devices were handed over to Paediatric ED Nurse, Abigail Harrison by Willmott Dixon’s Operations Manager, Steve Wallace.

Abigail said: “Children can often find the Emergency Department a scary place to be and we sometimes have to complete painful procedures. We strive to make a child's journey through Paeds ED as positive as possible. One way of reducing pain is through the use of a Buzzy. A Buzzy works by using vibration and the cold from the ice packs to confuse pain receptors to minimise the pain caused by a procedure. We are absolutely delighted to receive these devices, it will make such a difference when delivering care to our young patients.”

Social Value refers to the positive impact that an organisation can bring to the social, economic, and environmental well-being of its local community beyond just the structure being built. For UHP and Willmott Dixon, this means creating apprenticeships and training opportunities, supporting local suppliers, reducing environmental impact, engaging staff and volunteers, and contributing gifts-in-kind to enhance patient care and wellbeing. One of the first deliverables under this strategy was the donation of two Buzzy devices to the Paediatric (Children’s) Emergency Department.

Over its anticipated four-year build programme, the new Emergency Care Building partnership between UHP and Willmott Dixon will deliver apprenticeship programmes and training initiatives for local people, active engagement with local schools including mentoring and educational support, fundraising and health awareness campaigns as well as environmental enhancements including wildflower planting around the hospital to enhance patient experience and support biodiversity.

The room was full on Monday night as young people celebrated the Young Persons Patient Council’s 1st birthday. The Council, which now has 29 members, is growing all the time and founding members and new joiners came together last night for a special birthday meeting.

The Young Persons' Patient Council (YPPC) is chaired by Lachlan Mitchell, a young person who has experience of hospital care both as a patient over many years and now as a trainee Occupational Therapist.

“As chair of the Young Persons' Patient Council, I've seen what it's like when young people are given the space to shape the healthcare that affects them,” Lachlan said.

“Over the past year, we've grown to over 20 members, each bringing their lived experience, ideas, and energy to our meetings. A huge thank you to every member for giving your time, speaking up, and supporting each other. Together, our voices are driving real changes. Thank you also to those who facilitate our sessions; your encouragement and commitment behind the scenes have enabled the council to grow, evolve, and have a real impact.

“I'm really proud of what we've achieved in our first year, and even more excited about what's ahead.”

Over the past year our young members have got involved in helping in the interview process to recruit new staff; assessing the environment we provide care in; contributing ways to improve the environment; talking with clinical staff about how care is provided for young people and making suggestions, such as having a quiet hour, on the children’s wards. Soon they will be providing food tasting and providing feedback to improve the menu for children and young people, in line with Sophie’s Legacy and speaking on hospital radio.

From 20 October 2025, patients that have been advised by their GP to have blood tests can now book appointments at both Windsor House and Derriford Outpatients. This change is designed to reduce waiting times, improve patient experience, and give patients more choice.

Patients can book online for their appointments from 16 October. If you have limited or no access to the internet, provisions have been made and you can call our dedicated phoneline on 01752 433040.

If you are attending a UHP hospital appointment (e.g. with a consultant or specialist team) and have also been asked to have bloods taken, we encourage you to book an appointment, where you are able to. This gives you the convenience of knowing when you’ll be seen.

If you’ve been asked by your consultant or team to have bloods taken in preparation for a procedure, and you can’t book in time, you will still be seen at Derriford Outpatients’ phlebotomy service through the urgent or same-day pathway. We’ll do our best to keep waits as short as possible, but cannot guarantee waiting times.

If you’re unable to book an appointment, you do not need to book between 8am-11am, but please confirm with your clinician if this applies to you.

More information and how to book appointments is available on our website: https://www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/phlebotomy/

As part of the New Hospital Programme, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) is delighted that plans to expand Derriford Hospital’s urgent and emergency care pathways began today as we marked the beginning of construction of the new Emergency Care Building.

The new four-storey facility is designed to meet the growing demand for emergency care and to ensure the sickest patients receive swift, high-quality treatment. Due to open in 2028/29, the building is a £247 million investment into our healthcare estate.

The ground floor will feature an expanded Emergency Department (ED), with the existing ED space reconfigured to serve as a dedicated Paediatric ED. On the first floor, a Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit will provide urgent hospital treatment for patients who require same-day care, with follow-up managed in the community.

The second floor will house four state-of-the-art Interventional Radiology (IR) theatres, supporting advanced diagnosis and treatment using modern imaging technologies, along with a patient recovery area and staff rest facilities. Lastly, the third floor will include five new surgical theatres for both emergency and planned procedures, as well as a patient recovery area and staff office spaces.

In addition to enhancing clinical capacity, the building will provide a modern environment that meets current healthcare standards. Staff workspaces will be improved, and patients and their families will experience a better, more respectful and dignified journey through emergency care.

The start of construction was celebrated with a ceremony attended by key stakeholders from the New Hospital Programme, construction partners Mace and Willmott Dixon, Fred Thomas MP for Plymouth Moor View, as well as hospital staff and Emergency Department volunteers, Jan Lawrence, Eileen Pearce, Jean Stockwell, Wendy Tancock and David Short, who took part in a symbolic groundbreaking with ceremonial spades.

Stuart Windsor, Programme Director for Our Future Hospital said, “It has been a long journey to get to today, but we will now finally see the new Emergency Care Building start to rise from the ground. This important building will provide the people of Plymouth and the wider Devon and Cornwall peninsula a facility that they can be proud of, and will finally give our clinicians the space to care. The new building is one part of the wider improvements that the hospital is making in Urgent and Emergency Care, which will allow us to continue the improvement in the quality and timeliness of the care that we offer. I would like to thank all of those who have provided support for this scheme over the years – it is great to see the project visibly happening.”

Jan Lawrence, ED Volunteer and retired nurse said: I’ve been volunteering for three years since retiring. It’s a pleasure to attend such an important milestone for the development of the hospital that continues to serve the community in such a dedicated manner.”

Charlotte Taylor and Paul Mustow, New Hospital Programme Joint Senior Responsible Owners said: “We are delighted that the construction of Derriford’s new Emergency Care Building is commencing and is the first of the Wave 1 schemes in the New Hospital Programme to begin main construction. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of all those involved to get to this stage and look forward to seeing the new hospital developing.”

Darren Crook, New Hospital Programme Delivery Director said: “It’s rewarding and inspiring to see construction start on Derriford’s new Emergency Care Building. This modern facility will give patients high-quality and timely care, and provide staff with the spaces they need to do their best work. It’s a hugely important milestone for the hospital and the community it serves."
