The Saluki currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest breed of dog in the world.

Although new research may have undermined that claim, its ancient origins are undeniable. Archaeologists uncovered a golden pendant depicting a Saluki that dated back to 3,300BCE while the remains of mummified Salukis have been discovered in ancient tombs in the Upper Nile region.

These elegant dogs were highly valued by Arab tribesmen and Egyptian nobility alike. As high-speed sighthounds, they were prized for their speed, endurance, and keen hunting instinct.

Capable of reaching speeds of up to 42 mph, the Saluki was most famously used to hunt gazelle but, in the mountainous terrain of northern Iran and Turkey, it adapted to the environment, becoming “bigger, heavier, [and] hairier” to cope with larger prey, like deer.

Curious, loyal, and yet independent, the Saluki is an athletic dog that excels in competition, showing an aptitude for activities such as agility, lure coursing, and jumping. Despite their hunting origins and high prey drive, Salukis make dignified and gentle family pets as long as they get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.

Understanding a dog can be made easier if you pay close attention to their facial expressions, especially the movement of their ears. So, if you ever felt like your dog was judging you or giving you the side eye, you weren’t seeing things, they probably meant it 😂

UK LAWS ON DOG BARKING

It’s natural for dogs to bark sometimes. But when they bark a lot over a long period of time they can become a noisy nuisance to your neighbours.

Usually, when dogs bark persistently over a long period of time, it’s because they are distressed. Common reasons include:

• being left home alone for too long
• wanting attention
• feeling worried about something
• reacting to an unknown noise

We recommend contacting a qualified behaviourist to help you understand the underlying issue and support you to improve this.

What can happen if I break this law?

Dog barking can be classed as a ‘statutory nuisance’. Your local authority’s environmental health department can formally ask you to stop your dog from continuing the behaviour and, if you don’t, they can take your dog away from you. Not only this, but prolonged periods of barking can be stressful for your dog and have an impact on their wellbeing.

Law: Environmental Protection Act 1990

Because Bulldogs have quite large shoulders and such large heads, the safest way for a Bulldog to give birth is actually via C-section. About 80% of Bulldog litters are delivered this way, to avoid the risk of a puppy getting stuck in the birth canal

🦷CANINE GUM DISEASE🦷

Much like in humans, dental problems start with bacteria in the mouth sticking to the teeth and forming plaque which hardens to a solid yellow-brown build up on the teeth known as tartar. Tartar provides an ideal surface for more plaque to stick to which encourages further buildup and the gradual deterioration of dental health.

Good dental hygiene is as important for our pets as it is for us humans, as gum disease can leave pets prone to infections that can affect other vital organs, such as the heart, liver and kidneys.

This is why it’s important to regularly check your pet’s mouth and to also keep up a good dental hygiene schedule - maintaining your pet’s oral health is the best way to prevent the development of gum disease.

Endal, the Canine Partner of Gulf War veteran Allen Parton, was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal in recognition of his remarkable skills, his unique companionship and the unstinting devotion to duty that saved Allen’s life in so many ways.

When Allen - a naval engineer - suffered brain injuries in a car accident during the Gulf War in 1991, he could not walk, was unable to speak, read, write or remember any aspect of his life. A chance introduction to Endal changed his future as Endal became the inspiration and motivation behind Allen’s rehabilitation.

Endal became Allen’s partner in the home, on the street and at work and he rekindled Allen’s enthusiasm for life. On 24 May 2001, Endal carried out one outstanding act of devotion. Allen was knocked out of his wheelchair in a hotel car park and left unconscious on the ground. Endal did not panic. Instead, he calmly manoeuvred Allen into the recovery position, covered him with a blanket from the wheelchair and pushed the mobile to Allen’s face. Only when Allen regained consciousness did Endal leave his side to summon help.

For this act, he was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal for bravery and devotion to duty.
