The food pyramid

The food pyramid

⭐️Check out the new 2025-2030 Food Pyramid from realfood.gov – it’s flipped the script on healthy eating! 🥦🥩🧀 (See the attached image)

At the top (the biggest part!): Protein, Full fat Dairy, & Healthy Fats on one side – think steak, salmon, eggs, whole milk, yogurt, butter, avocados, and nuts – paired with Vegetables & Fruits like broccoli, spinach, apples and berries. 🍗🥛🥑🍎

Then it narrows down to Whole Grains at the base, like oats and true sourdough bread. 🍞

Why is this FAR superior to the old pyramid?

The classic one from the ‘90s had grains as the massive base (hello, 6-11 servings of bread, pasta, and rice! 🍞🍝), pushing a carb-heavy diet that fueled our nation’s obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease epidemics – with 50% of Americans now prediabetic or diabetic, and 75% dealing with at least one chronic condition.

This new inverted version prioritizes nutrient-dense, whole foods for better satiety, stable energy, muscle health, and gut function, while calling out highly processed junk, added sugars, and industrial oils as the real villains.

It embraces full-fat dairy and healthy fats for brain and hormone support, and treats grains as a smaller player – aligning with modern nutrition science to tackle our health crisis head-on. No more low-fat myths; hello, real food satisfaction! 💪🌱

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I’ve been promoting this exact type of eating plan – focusing on proteins, veggies, fruits, healthy fats, and minimal processed carbs – for the past 25 years in my practice.

In fact the dietary handout that I provide to everyone of my patients that I created, uses more of a plate design but with the same exact message.

It’s incredibly validating to see it finally come to fruition on a national level!

🙌 Who’s ready to ditch the old ways and embrace real, nourishing meals? Share your thoughts below!

Did anyone see the BBC segment about the primary school playing up lifting music on entry to the school ?
This is a recommendation I have made to clients, struggling to get going in the morning.
If you have a favourite piece of music, that you love to dance too. Then play that and dance around your kitchen first thing in the morning. Trust me it works.
This is one of my many favourites "Baccara - Yes Sir, I Can Boogie

Do you chew or inhale your food

Chewing your food is an important step in the digestive process. It breaks food down mechanically and also adds digestive juices which help breakdown too. If you eat too quickly and inhale your food then the stomach has to work harder to break the food down. This increases the time it takes for food to move through the digestive system and can increase the risk of acid reflux.

Next time you eat your food pay attention to how much you naturally chew it for and note the consistency of your food before you swallow. There is much debate about how many times you should chew but you should be aiming for a mushy consistency rather than chunks of food. A good tip is to put your knife and fork down between mouthfuls to increase your awareness of the chewing process. Your digestion will thank you for it

Let me know – are you a chewer or an inhaler?

More Reflux Tips

Do you eat at your desk and then suffer with reflux?

Digestion starts in the brain and is controlled by our parasympathetic nervous system. There are two parts to this nervous system – fight or flight and rest and digest. When one is active the other is switched off. Eating while working especially when stressed can mean that the digestive process is affected.

If you get reflux frequently and often eat on the go or when stressed then start to take time out to eat in a more relaxed location and switch off from technology (and yes that means stop scrolling here too – you can come back when you finish). Your digestive system will thank you and you will notice your reflux may improve.

It’s Acid Reflux Awareness week!

(24 -30 November 2025)

Did you know that acid reflux occurs when your stomach contents flow back into the oesophagus. This is not necessarily due to their being too much acid but can be due to an issue with the Lower Oesophageal Sphincter (LES).

This ring of muscle at the base of the oesophagus opens to allow the foods we swallow to enter the stomach and should close to keep the stomach contents until we next swallow. This muscle can be damaged as seen with a hiatus hernia but can also be affected by diet and lifestyle too.

Foods like chocolate and coffee and alcohol all cause the muscle to relax making it easier for reflux to occur. Avoiding these foods especially close to bedtime can help reduce your reflux symptoms.

It’s Acid Reflux Awareness week!

(24 -30 November 2025)

Persistent heartburn, indigestion and reflux lasting 3 weeks or more can increase the risk of Barrett’s Oesophagus and Oesophageal cancer. If you have prolonged symptoms it is important to get it checked by your GP.

There are many factors involved in acid reflux and the most important thing is to be aware of your triggers, minimise episodes and protect the oesophagus from damage. Over the next few days I will be sharing some simple tips and advice to help you manage it better.
