Laurel Leaf Counselling

Laurel Leaf Counselling Hello, I'm a qualified counsellor based in Plymouth, as well as online wherever you are in the UK. I understand how it feels to need someone to listen.

I'm a registered member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy. Maybe you don't get chance to talk openly with the people in your life, or perhaps you've fallen into unhelpful patterns. With my support, we can begin to change this. My philosophy & how I work

I work in an integrative way, meaning I can bring together different approaches depending on your needs. This always comes from a person-centred place, where I will work with you. Every person deserves to be seen as a unique, three-dimensional individual. One of the biggest things I can help with is facilitating awareness. Awareness of your past, your relationships, who you are, and what you want. Many people struggle to recognise or express certain parts of themselves, but I hope with my help you can begin to feel whole and become your true self. Sometimes it’s hard to find the words; in these times, we can try working in a more creative way if you find this helpful. I also offer walk & talk therapy for those that find inspiration from being in nature. Some clients may want a little more direction and I am happy to offer this where needed. It’s about figuring out who you are and what you want. I will do my best to meet you where you are on your journey and share that journey with you. Who I work with

I work with adults of all ages. I have experience of providing counselling across different settings, including charity and educational environments. I work with a range of different issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationships, grief, identity, and low self-esteem. What's next? I offer a discounted first session of only £25 for one hour. I understand it can be a daunting prospect starting therapy and it’s important to find the right fit for you. There's no obligation to continue after this if you choose not to. Get in touch via my website or email to find out more or to book a first session!

In my latest blog I share what therapy really involves and why it's more similar to physio than to surgery.

Please feel free to share and let me know what you think.

If you're new to therapy, you might be expecting to go in and have someone "fix" you. I want to share what you can actually expect from the process.

“I used to get really mad – but not anymore... Want to know my secret? (Mabel notices all the sights & sounds of the glade) ... That's what nature does. It's hard to be mad when you feel like you're part of something big.”

Pixar's Hoppers demonstrates the benefits of mindfulness and nature in managing strong emotions and feelings around lack of control.

Really enjoyed this film - funny, poignant messages, and a great lead character in Mabel.

Heard this quote on the show Paradise the other day ☀️ "Two sides of the same coin."

It's similar to the old "glass half full" saying about optimism. Probably something I need to do more often 😌

- Shakyamuni Buddha

I think it can be important to look at your past in therapy to work through things and understand yourself better now. I also think it's good to have dreams and goals to look forward to and work towards.

However I take this quote to mean that dwelling too much on the past (regret) and worrying about what might happen in the future (anxiety), does not bring contentment.

Focusing on the present moment and appreciating what's around you can ease suffering. Knowing that your past and future are not happening right now and therefore not something you need to fixate on.

Would love to hear your thoughts ⬇️

This works because it brings you back to the present moment by getting you to focus on your senses. And it's something you can easily do anywhere.

It can be easy to forget how you used to struggle with the things you now find easy. Or even how you can do things you never thought were possible.

But remember those things the next time you're scared of starting something new.
