Here's Tip 3 from the Integrated Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) Sustainable Healthcare campaign:

Sleep well. Two simple words. How often have you said that to a friend or loved one? Unfortunately, surveys consistently show that around a third of people don’t get a good night’s sleep. The amount of sleep that people are getting is dropping too, in both adults and children. That’s a worry, as getting a good night’s sleep is crucial for physical and mental wellbeing. In fact, sleep is as important for good health as diet and exercise.

Sleep is an essential function. It allows your body and mind to recharge and restore energy levels. Good sleep improves your brain performance, mood, and health. It helps the body stave off diseases, process information, and undergo a number of maintenance processes amongst other things. Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly. It’s importance can’t be stressed enough.

Take this opportunity to think about your sleep. Do you get enough sleep? How is the quality of your sleep? Start by creating a relaxing sleep environment and establish a routine, as poor sleep hygiene can often be a cause of sleep problems. Things like going to bed and getting up at the same time can help with this, as can avoiding caffeine and tech before bedtime. There can of course be underlying issues which are making it hard for you to sleep, so don’t be afraid to seek professional help to talk through these issues and look for natural, sustainable ways to support you in getting better sleep.

Good quality sleep lays the foundations for good health and wellbeing, so start to prioritise and protect your sleep today.

Let’s improve our health together.

As part of the campaign for Sustainable Healthcare Day that took place on 6 April, the Integrated Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) - which includes CNHC as an Associate Member - want to give you some tools that could help. In fact, they’re going to give you one tip a week to try for a year.

This is tip number 2:
How much water and other fluids do you drink each day? If you’re one of those people who goes through the day and gets so wrapped up doing things that you forget to drink, then take this opportunity to make keeping hydrated an integral part of your day. Whilst the NHS recommends you drink around 6-8 240ml glasses a day, or about 2 litres, other experts say that it’s better to trust your own thirst mechanism, and don’t ignore it when it tells you that you are thirsty. After all, we’re all individuals with different lifestyles and needs, which vary depending on factors like activity level, climate, and overall health. What is sure is that water in the body is essential to ensure that all bodily functions are able to take place as normal - regulating body temperature; keeping joints lubricated and skin healthy; preventing infections; delivering nutrients to cells and keeping organs functioning properly, and so much more. Studies have also shown that being well-hydrated improves sleep quality, cognition and mood.

Why not start by keeping a water diary, and see how much fluid you actually drink during the day. Then you can start to build keeping yourself hydrated into your everyday routine. There’s no excuses with this one, it’s easy to do, and vital to help your body function properly.

Follow the IHC campaign over the coming year to help you sustain your health and wellbeing,. We’d love you to share your own tips too. Tell us what you do in the comments below, and maybe it’ll help someone else to improve their health and wellbeing.

What’s the recipe for sustainable health and wellbeing? The answer. Not one single thing, and not exactly the same for everyone, as we’re all individuals. However, there are things, often simple, small things that you can do every day to help improve your health and wellbeing, and move towards a more sustainable and healthy future. Self-empowerment and personal responsibility are the foundations for better health and wellbeing.

As part of the campaign for Sustainable Healthcare Day that took place on 6 April, the Integrated Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) - which includes CNHC as an Associate Member - want to give you some tools that could help. In fact, they’re going to give you one tip a week to try for a year. Give them a try if you can, and see the effect on your health and wellbeing over the next 12 months. Some of them you may already do, some you may think are so obvious but everyone forgets to do on a daily basis, and some you may have never thought of before but could contribute towards a healthier mind and body.

The first tip for the year is to take a walk. We know it’s obvious, but it’s an easy way to improve your daily health routine. Are you too sedentary? Do you sometimes get to the end of the day and realise you’ve hardly moved at all? Could you incorporate a walk into your everyday routine? It can be long or short, and remember not to overdo it if you’re not used to it. The most important thing is that you get moving. The IHC are starting off their year of tips with some easy ones, but will challenge you to try a wide range of things which together could transform your health and wellbeing.

We’d love you to share your own tips too. Tell us what you do in the comments below, and maybe it’ll help someone else to improve their health and wellbeing.
