Pregnancy myths -busted!

Myth: You can’t get pregnant while breastfeeding.
Truth: Breastfeeding may delay ovulation, but it’s not a reliable form of birth control. If you’re not planning to conceive again right away, talk to your provider about safe options. For more information visit:
https://www.nhs.uk/baby/support-and-services/s*x-and-contraception-after-birth/

Myth: You can’t have s*x while pregnant.
Truth: It's perfectly safe to have s*x during pregnancy unless your doctor or midwife has told you not to. For more information on s*x in pregnancy and when to avoid s*x in pregnancy visit:

Myth: Cravings tell you what your body needs.
Truth: Cravings are common, but they don't necessarily reflect nutritional needs. If you’re craving non-food items like dirt, talk to your provider. For more information visit:

As new parents, ensuring your baby sleeps safely is one of your top priorities. The NHS provides expert advice to help you create a safe sleep environment for your little one. Here are some key tips:

-Always place your baby on their back to sleep, on a firm mattress in a cot or crib.
-Keep the cot free from pillows, blankets, and soft toys to reduce the risk of suffocation.
-Keep your baby’s head uncovered. Avoid hats or loose bedding that could cover their face.
-Ensure your baby is not too hot or too cold – dress them in light layers and check their temperature regularly.

For more guidance on safe sleeping, visit the NHS website for trusted resources: https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/baby-basics/newborn-and-baby-sleeping-advice-for-parents/safe-sleep-advice-for-babies/

We’ve created a helpful booklet containing QR codes that link to key topics and resources displayed throughout our maternity and neonatal units on the information trees.

Some of the topics are important for you to read in advance of attending consultant appointments, for example birth after caesarean, considering a caesarean and induction of labour. Other general information can be found such as reduced fetal movements and birth preparation.

Ask a member of staff for a copy if you don't already have one.

We want to remind people about the closure of the single lane previously open to public vehicles outside the front of Derriford Hospital. Public vehicles are no longer permitted to drive past our main entrance.

It is now advised to use Car Park F (Disabled Car Park) which has had multiple drop off/pick up bays installed with a maximum stay of 30 minutes. Please do not use these as an alternative to disabled parking if you are unable to find a space elsewhere. Licensed taxis are also advised to use these bays.

To access Car Park F, please enter the hospital site either from the mini roundabout, travelling south from Derriford Road down Hospital Road and turning right before the bus lane, or enter via Morlaix Drive, turning left towards the multi-story car park.

However, as before, patients can still be dropped off outside the Emergency Department in an emergency. This has not changed. Please continue to enter the site from the road entrance near the helipad for this purpose.
