It’s that time of year again when mini eggs are lining the supermarket shelves. But, did you know that, just like grapes, they are the perfect size to block a small child’s airway and choke them? And, their hard shell can make it difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

With whole grapes we advise cutting them in half lengthways and ideally into quarters to create thin strips. But chopping up mini eggs isn’t as easy. So, what can you do?

1. Hide them from the children and eat them yourself – good luck with that!

2. Put the mini eggs into a sealable plastic bag and smash them into small pieces with a rolling pin. Or, crush them in a pestle and mortar.

3. Opt for a different treat. Larger, hollow eggs are much safer for little ones.

This Mother's Day, we want to share the story of one incredible Mum who saved her baby girl's life just a few months ago after attending a Mini First Aid class. Nicole, we think you are an absolute supermum 💚 This is Ava's story:

“My little girl was born on 19th December 2023 and at just four days old, she became unresponsive while traveling in the car. We were on the motorway and unable to stop so I gave her immediate rescue breaths in the car seat before then having to take her out of the car seat and onto the passenger seat where I continued with rescue breaths until we could pull over and call an ambulance.

I had attended a Mini First Aid baby & child class in the weeks before Ava’s birth and I’m thankful that all that I had learned came back to me at that moment.

This went on for five miles before Ava began to breathe independently again, and it was a further 15 minutes before she fully regained consciousness, reflexes and colour. We were blue-lighted to hospital where they explained that my actions had saved her life.

Ava had experienced reflux, triggered by being in a moving vehicle, along with having an underdeveloped airway. This triggered her vagus nerve to stimulate an apnoea episode which, due to her position and reflux, she was unable to come round from. The consultant reassured us that this was circumstantial and that there was nothing we could have done to anticipate or prevent it.

Despite the trauma of having to complete such a task at four days old, and the mental images of my baby appearing lifeless that will haunt me forever, I am so so grateful I attended the course. It was £25 to book, and it literally gave me the knowledge to act, respond and save my baby’s life.

Ava is now doing well and gaining weight. We are so relieved and trying to see the positives rather than holding on to the trauma of it.

I not only feel the course helped me to respond, but also to understand the proportionality of what I did. It would’ve been so much more traumatic had I not known what I was doing or why I was doing it. It didn’t only help me at the time, it has also truly helped my recovery.

Thank you so so so much, first-aid training should be on every parent’s to-do list and I will tell every expectant mother I know about Mini First Aid 💗”

We started our Mini First Aid Family Health Podcast to try to answer some of the questions that we get asked all the time in our classes up and down the country.

We had no idea if people would want to listen to these conversations and have been blown away by the response to the podcast. Our first two series have now had over 5,000 downloads and we are in the top 25% of podcasts globally.

In our first two seasons, we have covered topics such as sepsis, meningitis, children's burns, parent overwhelm, button batteries and black maternal health and we have lots more brilliant conversations planned and coming soon.

So don't get left behind, head to your favourite podcast provider, search for Family Health by Mini First Aid and subscribe now to catch up on all episodes 💚 🎧
