🚨 URGENT: Access to Work is failing the very people it was designed to support — and we need your help.
Access to Work is a lifeline for thousands of disabled people across the UK.
It doesn’t just support people with visual impairments — it helps those with physical disabilities, neurodiverse conditions, and many others to work, build careers, and live more independently.
Through Access to Work, people can receive:
• Essential equipment
• Support workers
• Help with travel costs
• Adjustments that make employment possible
For many, it has been the difference between unemployment and achieving their goals — whether that’s running a business, securing a dream job, or simply being able to work with dignity and independence.
But right now, the scheme is in crisis.
If you’ve applied within the last two years, there’s a strong chance you’re still waiting.
We are hearing of:
• Decisions taking up to 37 weeks
• Self-employed applicants waiting up to 19 months
• Claims from 2024 still being processed
• Rejection rates rising significantly year on year
This is not just frustrating — it is stopping people from working, earning, and living independently.
👉 Please take 30 seconds to sign the petition and help protect Access to Work.
There is a petition calling on the Government to prioritise the scheme, fix the delays, and ensure it is properly funded so that disabled people can access support when they need it.
This is not a UK Sight Loss Collective petition — it has been created by an external campaign — but it is something we strongly support.
👉 Sign it. Share it. Talk about it.
They are already over halfway to their goal — and with your help, we can push this over the line.
Every signature matters.

Access to Work decisions are taking 37 weeks and rejections are up 22%. Disabled workers are losing jobs they love, this needs to change now. Sign:

Step Into Someone Else’s World – Sponsored Blind Walk (Plymouth)
As part of our mission to raise awareness of sight loss, the UK Sight Loss Collective and All Things Dotty are proud to support a local, hands-on experience that helps people truly understand what life without sight can feel like.
On Saturday 18 April at 11:00am, we’re hosting a Sponsored Blind Walk at Saltram House and Gardens.

This is a 2-mile walk with a difference:
• Mile 1 – one person in your pair will be blindfolded
• Mile 2 – you swap, and the other person takes their turn

With the support of your partner, you’ll begin to experience the world through sound, touch, and trust — just as many people with sight loss do every day.

We’ll finish at the café for some well-earned lunch and a chance to reflect on the experience together.
Tickets are just £5.00 per couple – NOT including lunch.
👉 Book here:
https://allthingsdottybraille.co.uk/products/sponsored-blind-walk-plymouth
Full details will be emailed to all participants closer to the time.

Important Note
The name “Blind Walk” is simply intended to clearly describe the experience and is not intended to cause offence. The aim is to raise awareness in a respectful and meaningful way, helping people better understand the challenges and realities of sight loss.

Why This Matters
Raising awareness is the first step towards real change.
The more people understand sight loss, the more accessible our world becomes.
Bring a friend.
Challenge yourself.
See the world differently.

Why I Started the UK Sight Loss Collective
I didn’t start the UK Sight Loss Collective because I wanted another project.
I started it because I kept seeing the same problems over and over again.
People missing hospital appointments because they couldn’t read their letters.
Young people struggling through education without the support they needed.
Talented individuals being overlooked for jobs simply because employers didn’t understand accessibility.
And I kept thinking…
Why are we all dealing with this separately?
Why isn’t there one unified voice bringing this together?
That’s why the Collective exists.
Not to replace charities.
Not to compete.
But to bring people together.
To share experiences.
To support each other.
And to make sure people with sight loss are heard — properly.
We’ve already started building something.
Now we need more voices.
If you want to be part of it, message me.

Accessible Healthcare – We Need Your Experiences
The UK Sight Loss Collective is gathering real experiences from blind and partially sighted people about accessibility in healthcare.
Despite the Accessible Information Standard, many people are still not receiving information in formats they can read.
We would like to hear about your experiences, including:
• Appointment letters you could not read
• Missed appointments due to inaccessible information
• Medication instructions that were not accessible
• Being asked to rely on others to read private medical information
• Difficulties with GP surgeries, hospitals, or NHS services
If you are comfortable sharing, please tell us:
• What happened
• What the impact was
• Whether the issue was resolved
You can message this page directly, or email:
brandon.hulcoop@allthingsdottybraille.co.uk
We may also invite some participants to take part in a short 10–15 minute conversation to understand experiences in more detail.
Your experiences will help inform the UK Sight Loss Collective Position Paper and support efforts to improve accessibility across the NHS.
With your consent only, responses may be summarised anonymously.
Thank you for helping us highlight where change is needed.

We Are Building a National Voice for Sight Loss – Join Us
Across the UK, over two million people are living with sight loss.
Yet every day, people are still facing barriers that should not exist:
• Appointment letters that cannot be read
• Education systems that don’t provide the right support
• Employers who don’t understand accessibility
• Public spaces that are unsafe to navigate
The UK Sight Loss Collective exists to change that.
We are a growing movement of blind and partially sighted people, charities, professionals and campaigners working together to:
• Raise awareness of the real challenges people face
• Share lived experiences
• Work collaboratively with government and organisations
• Push for meaningful, practical change
We are currently developing our first national position paper, which will be shared with Members of Parliament to highlight the changes needed across:
• Education & Employment
• Accessible Healthcare
• Accessible Streets & Transport
Our next meeting takes place on:
Tuesday 31 March at 11:00am
If you are:
• Blind or partially sighted
• A parent or family member
• A charity or organisation
• A professional working in accessibility
• Or someone who simply wants to make a difference
We would love to hear from you.
Message this page or email:
brandon.hulcoop@allthingsdottybraille.co.uk
This is not just a discussion.
This is about building a unified voice that cannot be ignored.

Education for Young People with Sight Loss – We Want to Hear Your Experiences

The UK Sight Loss Collective is gathering information about the challenges and barriers faced by visually impaired children and young people in education, including primary school, secondary school and college.

We are particularly interested in hearing about:
• Access to specialist education such as the Royal National College (RNC) in Hereford
• Support received from local authorities
• Experiences of funding challenges
• Legal appeals or battles to secure appropriate education
• Access to assistive technology and specialist training

If you are willing to share your experience, please send us a message through this page, or email our founder Brandon at:
brandon.hulcoop@allthingsdottybraille.co.uk

We will then arrange a short conversation (around 15 minutes) to hear about your experience navigating the education system.

Your insights will help inform our upcoming UK Sight Loss Collective position paper on education and employment. Real experiences are vital in helping us highlight barriers and advocate for meaningful change.

If you choose to participate, and with your consent only, responses may be summarised anonymously within the position paper.

Thank you for helping us work towards a more accessible education system.

The UK Sight Loss Collective Is Growing – And We Need You

For too long, blind and partially sighted people across the UK have been spoken about… but not listened to.

Policies are written without lived experience.
Accessibility is treated as optional.
Opportunities are lost because our voices are fragmented.

The UK Sight Loss Collective exists to change that.

We are building a unified national voice for sight loss – bringing together individuals, charities, advocates, businesses and professionals who believe accessibility should never be an afterthought.

This is not a discussion group.
This is not a replacement for existing organisations.

This is a united front.

What does joining mean?

• Direct input into national campaigns
• A shared platform to amplify your work
• Regular online meetings
• Action-focused updates and progress
• A stronger, collective voice

Our next meeting is 26 February.

If you care about the future of accessibility in the UK, now is the time to step forward.

We are currently inviting Founding Members to help shape the direction of this movement.

Comment “Collective” below or send a direct message to be part of it.

Together, we can build something the country cannot ignore .
