James Brothers is the oldest Independent Funeral Directors in the South Hams and Plymouth area, having been run by the same family since the 1850's
James Brothers is the oldest family owned independent Funeral Directors in the Plymouth area. It was established in the mid 1800's by Ned (Edward James) who lived in the small village of Brixton and where his descendants still live today. As with many early rural Funeral Directors it was initially an extension of the main profession of the individual, and was passed down through the generations. F
rom Ned to his son Harold, then to Allan who in turn passed it on to his half-brother Ralph and now to Tim. Although the business has always be centralised in Brixton recent events meant that it had to move and relocated to Colebrook in Plympton, although its spiritual home remains in Brixton, where Tim lives with his family,

It's been a while since we updated the pictures in the window, so I've managed to do it today.
It is a companion to one of the other pictures displayed in the past, but this time looking in the opposite direction, towards Borringdon Road.

As always, a great floral display should be... well displayed. A fantastic and incredibly large Royal Marine badge!

Another fantastic floral display, this time from Tributes Florists.
We can honestly say we would never have expected to see a killer whale gracing our hearse!
Not only was the Orca truly spectacular but the cricket bat was too, and with the normal, caring, forward thinking of Anne and Dave, at Tributes, the cricket ball was designed to be removed so it could be kept as a keepsake.
The family were both stunned and delighted!

Although football teams are always going to cause some rivalry between their supporters, we have to admit that the work done on the Man Utd badge is exemplary and stupendous work by Hannah Burnetts florist

On a day to celebrate mothers everywhere, we would also like to remember those who have gone.
Happy Mother's Day! π

On a glorious sunny afternoon yesterday, Tim and Ryan led these stunning horses and carriage around the country lanes, starting from the family home to a crowded St. Peterβs Church, Noss Mayo.
For a man who grew up and lived his life with horses, what a fitting send-off! We were honoured to be part of the day.
Huge thanks to Kilvey Carriage Hire South Wales for providing us with their magnificent horses and carriage.

As well as arranging traditional funerals β coffins, cars, floral tributes, etc., we are happy to assist families who wish to carry out a unique way of honouring their loved ones in their own way.
We had a farming family last week who did not want a casket, but provided a burial shroud, which was handmade from their own sheepβs fleece and dyed from flowers picked from their garden.
A truly unique way, like wrapping a loved one in a warm blanket.

We understand that the process of arranging a funeral when a loved one dies can be a difficult and costly experience. The price of a funeral can be expensive, especially in todayβs climate with the worry of the cost of living.
We offer a range of options suited to your budget and requirements.

A family provided flowers for their loved one's funeral this week. How lovely is this floral tribute?

It's been a while since we had one of our old Colebrook photos in the window, but that has changed today!
We have a picture of the Church opposite us from about 1974, it was originally a Methodist Church, but now it is an Orthodox Romanian church.
It is not intended at all, but just realised you can see the old church banner refelected over the photo!

These days there are many different types of coffin available, from traditional wood design, to woven coffins (wicker, bamboo, banana leaf and more) through to cardboard or even picture coffins.
Every now and then someone will choose something a little different that stands out, such is the case with this one, a Gainsborough Coffin, in mahogony.

James Brothers Funeral Directors is the Plymouth areas oldest small independent Funeral Directors in the Plymouth area, having been established in Brixton, around 1870 by Ned (Edward James).
Although at the start Funeral Directing was not exactly a business per se, rather an extension of an existing profession, in Nedβs case carpentry, it was something that would grow into a profession over time.
The business passed from Ned to his son Harold who saw sweeping changes as where once all the villages would have had their own Undertakers, the improvement in transport meant that a single Directors would find themselves covering multiple villages.
Harold retired reluctantly in 1960 and his son Allan took over, provisioning it with itβs own set of cars, and latterly a Chapel of Rest. The business then passed to his half brother Ralph in 1996, who ran it with his wife Penny from their home, The Grindstone in Brixton.
In 2002, their son Tim joined them and in 2017, realising that Ralph was beginning to struggle with the everyday running of things, they began to look for a premises away from the family home. Although they could not find anything in Brixton, they discovered a new home in Colebrook, Plympton.
In 2018, with Ralph battling ill health Tim took over a bit more suddenly than was expected, and now runs things from their offices at Leeds House. He is, however, determined not to break ties with the village and lives there with his family.
Although the move was not an easy one, not in the least because of a number of tragedies that hit one after another, Tim and his team are now beginning to really find their feet and are their to support people in need when they really need it, just as the family has done for over a century.
