LIPOSUCTION… What’s there to know?
Liposuction involves removing fat from parts of the body by sucking it out through a tube. It is most effective for people whose weight is normal with good skin quality. It is not a substitute for losing weight and in some cases weight loss may be advised prior to the procedure.
Liposuction is best used to target areas of the body it is difficult to shift weight from. Common areas include: tummy, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, neck and upper arms. Liposuction can also be used to remove lipomas (benign fatty lumps) and fatty swellings under men’s ni***es which can look like breasts (gynaecomastia).
Before the surgery you will meet with your surgeon to discuss your desired outcome. They will assess your past medical history, height, weight and body shape. You will have photos taken for your records.
Liposuction is performed either under local or general anaesthetic depending on the area. You will have some small cuts made in the skin in order to insert the cannula (tube). The cannula is then inserted and used to loosen the fat cells and insert a solution containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline to reduce bleeding. Suction is then used to remove the fat cells. The cuts will be sewn up at the end.
The main risks involved are small scars from the cannula insertion, friction burns from the cannula rubbing against the skin to remove the fat, bruising, bleeding, seroma (bodily fluid which fills the area where fat has been removed), infection, asymmetry, undesirable outcome, damage to deeper structures and change in sensation of the overlying skin.
After the surgery you will either go home the same day or stay in for 1 night, depending on the length and extent of the procedure. You will have small dressings on the wounds which can be removed a few days after surgery. You should rest for a few days after the surgery as it will be painful and there will be bruising. You may be asked to wear a compression garment. It can take 1-6 months to see the final results.
