Thai New Year, known as Songkran, is the country's biggest and most significant annual festival. Officially celebrated from 13 to 15 April, it marks the traditional New Year based on the solar calendar. The festival is famous globally for its massive, country-wide water fights, but it is deeply rooted in ancient Buddhist and Hindu traditions of renewal and cleansing. 💧💧💧💧💧

Core Traditions and Rituals
Songkran is a time for spiritual renewal and family unity:

Cleaning: The festival begins with "spring cleaning" homes, schools, and public spaces to wash away bad luck from the previous year.

Merit-Making: Many Thais visit temples to offer food to monks, listen to prayers, and perform Song Nam Phra—pouring scented water over Buddha statues as a sign of purification.

Honouring Elders: A vital part of the holiday is Rod Nam Dum Hua, where younger generations gently pour scented water over the hands of parents and elders to show respect and receive blessings.
Sand Stupas: In many regions, people build sand pagodas at temples, which are decorated with colourful flags to replenish the sand carried away on shoes throughout the year.

The Modern Water Festival
While the traditional side remains, Songkran has evolved into the "world's biggest water fight":

Water Splashing: Public streets are often closed to traffic to become arenas for revelers armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses.

Symbolism: Getting soaked is more than just fun; the water represents washing away misfortunes and welcoming a fresh start.
White Paste: Participants often smear din sor pong (a cooling talcum paste) on each other's faces as a symbol of protection, though this is sometimes restricted in certain high-traffic areas for safety.

Bangkok: The capital goes "all-out" with intense water battles on Khao San Road and Silom Road.
