What Your DEXA Scan Isn’t Telling You

I had a patient this week feeling really anxious after a DEXA scan showed early changes in bone density.

And here’s the part that often gets missed

Bone health is not just a supplement conversation.

Yes nutrients matter.
But bones are living tissue that respond to:
• Load and resistance (bones strengthen when they’re challenged)
• Movement and impact (not just walking, but strength work)
• Protein and minerals (the building blocks, not just calcium)
• Hormones, digestion, and absorption
• Stress and nervous system load

You can take all the calcium in the world but without the signal to use it, bone won’t remodel effectively.

This is why bone health needs a whole-body conversation

Your tongue is like your internal weather report

At the start of the week, my tongue looked more puffy and full.
In Chinese medicine, this often points to sluggish digestion and poor fluid movement food and drinks aren’t being transformed efficiently. This matched how I felt, tired, heavy, and a bit foggy.

I responded with warming, nourishing foods soups, cooked meals, and more regular eating. As digestion improved, the tongue began to de-puff.

Mid-week, a new sign appeared, redness along the edges of the tongue.
The sides relate to the Liver, and redness here can indicate Liver heat often linked to frustration, feeling stuck, or a lack of movement.

Again, that made sense.
Bad weather, less exercise, and feeling blocked with a work project had all been building quietly.

So I adjusted again.

I added a tea with bitter orange peel (Chen Pi) and got back to gentle movement.
Bitter flavours help create movement and release they support the Liver, improve digestive flow, and prevent heat from becoming trapped.

By the end of the week, my tongue looked less puffy, with less redness at the edges.
Not perfect but clear progress.

This is what I love about tongue diagnosis:
it quickly reflects your current condition.
And when you respond appropriately, the body changes.

Small shifts.
Clear feedback.
A changing internal climate

What does your tongue say about you?

Summer me , glowing, warm, energised
Winter me, paler, slower, a little more tired

Same body. Different season.

In Chinese medicine, the tongue is like a weather report for your digestion and nervous system.
And right now, mine is showing signs of Damp meaning food isn’t transforming as efficiently, fluids are lingering, and energy feels heavier.

That’s why winter asks for:
• warmth
• moisture
• simplicity
• foods your body doesn’t have to fight with

This is exactly why I’m leaning into gentle soups, slow meals, and warming ingredients not restriction, not detoxing, just support.

This is food your body knows what to do with.

If you’ve been judging your winter self by summer expectations, this is your reminder:
Your body isn’t failing it’s communicating.

January doesn’t need extremes.
After Christmas, I find my body does best with warm, grounding meals rather than cutting everything out or pushing harder.

This has been one of my go-to breakfasts lately
rice paper wrap, eggs, spinach, feta sometimes cooked in sesame oil with lightly toasted black sesame seeds.

In Chinese medicine, black sesame is traditionally used to support Kidney energy linked with resilience, vitality, and ageing well.
Small additions, made consistently, can make a real difference.

High in protein, kind on digestion, steady for blood sugar and actually satisfying.
Simple food, cooked gently, working with the body rather than against it.

Not Quite Happy New Year yet! 🐍 to 🐎

Although many of us have stepped into January feeling the pull of a fresh start, in Chinese medicine we are still in the closing chapter of the old year, with the New Year beginning later, in February.

As we prepare to leave the Year of the Snake behind, I’ve been reflecting on the deep inner shifts many of you have been moving through.

In Chinese Medicine, the Snake teaches us about transformation and the courage it takes to shed old skins, especially the ones we’ve outgrown but still cling to.

This past year, many of you faced crossroads. Questions around work, relationships, health, and identity. And often, these emotional shifts showed up physically: tight shoulders, restless sleep, tension behind the eyes.

Within Five Element Theory, these moments ask us to work with Metal energy the Lungs. To discern, release, and create space.

Now, as we approach the Year of the Horse, the energy begins to rise. Wood energy is about direction, growth, and action. But movement only flows with ease when the groundwork of reflection has been done.

So I invite you to pause:
What have you shed?
Where are you being called next?

Your body is wise. If you’re feeling stuck, fatigued, or unsure, these may be messages, not just symptoms.

Acupuncture and somatic coaching can support both the physical and emotional sides of change. If you feel called to work through what’s ready to shift, I’m here.

As we wind down for the year, I wanted to take a moment to thank you.

Thank you for trusting us with your health and healing.
For sharing your story. For your presence, whether you visited once or many times it meant something.

This time of year brings up so much.
Joy, yes, but also fatigue, reflection, and for many, a longing to rest. If you’re feeling that tug to slow down, to do less, to simply be you’re not alone. You’re in tune.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, winter is when Yang energy retreats to the root a time of stillness, deep nourishment, and quiet repair. There is wisdom in the pause. You don’t need to do more to be enough.

We’ll be closing the clinic over the holidays to honour this natural reset and spend time with loved ones.

Christmas Closure:
We’ll be closed from Christmas Eve (24th December) until Sunday 5th January.
Appointments resume from Monday 6th January.

Thank you again for being here.
We feel deeply grateful to walk this path with you, and look forward to supporting you again in the new year.

Wishing you peace, rest, and whatever this season needs to be for you.

With love,
Sam & the Learn to Heal team x

There’s that moment…
When the needles are in, you’re lying there warm and held, and your whole body exhales.
It’s like your system remembers how to relax, how to feel safe, grounded, and clear.

My patients tell me this feeling is like nothing else.
The pain softens. The anxiety quiets.
And sometimes, emotions rise , the kind that have been held too long.

This is the power of acupuncture.
Not just to “treat” a symptom, but to create a space where healing can begin physically, emotionally, energetically.

And yes, sometimes it looks a lot like this…

Winter invites us to slow down… even when the world doesn’t.

Winter is the most Yin time of year, slow, inward, restorative. But the world doesn’t pause for seasons. We’re busier than ever, and our nervous systems often don’t get the rest they deeply need.

In Chinese Medicine, winter is governed by the Water element and the Kidneys, the root of resilience, vitality, and longevity. The emotion linked to this season is fear, which can quietly surface as anxiety, fatigue, or discomfort in the stillness.

So what does it look like to winter well?

Rest more than you push
Get morning light to stabilise mood + hormones
Keep your lower back and ankles warm
Nourish with warm, cooked seasonal foods
Choose gentle movement that restores, not depletes

The stillness of winter isn’t empty.
It’s the space where new life begins.
Winter well and you will have the energy renewed for Spring.

The bloating eases.
Your sleep deepens.
You start saying no to what drains you.
You feel clearer, lighter, more like yourself.

And then you stop. The old habits creep back in.
You miss a session. You forget to take the herbs. You start to question if it was even working.

Here’s what I want you to know This isn’t failure.
This part of the healing journey the part where everything starts to shift is also the part where we resist. Not because we don’t want change, but because change can feel unfamiliar. Even the good kind.

Your brain wants safety. Your nervous system wants the known. So when you step into something new, even if it’s healthier your body might hesitate.

This is what I call stage 3, Where we begin to rewire. Where beliefs shift. Where healing moves deeper than just physical.

It’s often the moment I recommend extra support tools that help anchor the nervous system, create space for awareness, and gently hold the process of becoming.

This is the stage I often refer patients to NLP and mindset support.

Paul .cashmore has created a grounded, supportive meditation and mindset programme designed for just this.

To help you cultivate the daily rituals that keep you on track.
Not as a quick fix but as a way to stay connected when things get messy.

It’s calm, grounding, and designed for people who struggle with meditation but know they need a nervous system reset.

This week in clinic, I’ve been hearing the same thing again and again…

“I’m so tired but I don’t feel like I should be.”
“I just want to keep going I was doing so well!”
“I’m not ready for the dark nights and slow energy.”

Here’s the truth, your body is ready, even if your mind isn’t.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this time of year is about conservation.
We’ve moved from the outward energy of summer into the inward pull of winter. Where summer is expansive, autumn and winter is restorative.
The Kidney system your deep energy reserves needs time to replenish.

That tiredness you’re feeling?
It’s not a problem to fix.
It’s a signal to listen to.

We can’t live in summer forever.
Hygge the art of getting cosy is about letting your body return to rhythm.
Candles. Slow meals. Early nights. Restorative rituals.
Healing is happening, even in stillness.

This week, I’ve been pairing treatments with candlelit rest and herbal teas in clinic are the perfect companion for these slower days.
Scent, light, warmth this is medicine too.

Let your body guide you.
Let slowness be a welcome return.
Let rest be your strength
