Feeling bloated, heavy or sluggish lately? Spring is often a time we should lighten up or meal otherwise you we might notice more signs of what we call “dampness” in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dampness can show up as:
• bloating
• puffiness
• brain fog
• fatigue
• feeling weighed down after eating

So this week’s Batch Cook Sunday is focused on warm, nourishing meals that help support digestion while gently lightening things up for spring.

On the menu:
Spring greens and chicken broth soup with Job’s tears
In Chinese Medicine, Job’s tears are traditionally used to help drain dampness and support the Spleen and digestion. I love adding them into soups at this time of year when the body can feel a little stagnant after winter.

I’ll be having this for dinners, especially on late clinic evenings because it’s nourishing without feeling too heavy.

Warm roasted Chinese cabbage and kale salad with marinated smoked tofu

The marinade is made with:
• sesame oil
• black sesame seeds
• rice wine vinegar
• garlic
• fresh ginger
• gluten free soy sauce
• a little honey

Ginger and garlic are especially supportive for digestion in TCM. They help warm the digestive system and encourage movement when things feel stuck or sluggish.

I’ve also soaked mung beans which I’ll cook and add to soups and warm salads through the week.

Mung beans are often used in Chinese Medicine to help clear heat and support gentle detoxification while still being easy to digest.

One of the biggest misconceptions about supporting digestion is that we need cold salads, juices or restrictive cleanses. But for many people especially when digestion already feels weak, bloated or depleted warm cooked meals can be far more supportive.

Spring nourishment is not about punishment or “detoxing harder.”
It’s about helping the body move, digest and flow more easily again.

I recently worked with a patient who was doing everything “right”.

Eating well.
Training consistently.
Showing up for her health.

The problem was her body wasn’t responding. Weight wasn’t moving, her body feeling fatigued and the constant feeling she needed to p*e!

This wasn’t happening because she wasn’t trying hard enough…but because her body couldn’t process and clear what she was giving it.

Her kidneys and liver were under strain.
The body’s natural filters were slowing down.

So instead of nutrients being used efficiently…
things were getting stuck in the system.

Blocked drains

This is where we shifted the focus.

Instead of pushing harder and adding more things into the system. We took the pressure off the system less protein, removing the creatine yes I know about strength and brain health but you can’t just jump on health trends without understanding your own body!

We introduced specific herbs to help mobilise fluids, created a plan to gently support the organs at a pace her body could handle. At the same time, we explored something deeper.

Where else in her life did she feel stuck?

Because the body often mirrors what we hold onto emotionally. Healing isn’t about chasing trends or quick fixes.

It’s about understanding the whole system
and working with the body, not against it.

The sea felt like this today. Restless and unsettled. Like something trying to break through. I think that’s what conflict feels like when we don’t let it move. It doesn’t disappear it turns inward.

You tell yourself it’s easier to keep the peace.
To not say the thing, not to disrupt the relationship. To be a better person, swallow it down.

However there’s a cost to that, quiet tension that sits in the body. A holding and a constant negotiating with yourself.

Part of you knows the truth.
Part of you is still trying to protect something… or someone.

And you end up in between, not fully expressed or fully at ease.

In Chinese medicine, we see this all the time.
What isn’t expressed doesn’t resolve.
It stagnates, lingers in the body as tension, as symptoms, as that feeling you can’t quite shake.

If you’ve ever felt that pull between keeping the peace and being honest with yourself, you’re not alone. It’s a hard place to stand, your body knows which side is asking to be heard.

Qi isn’t something abstract.
It’s something happening.

Every second, your body is producing signalling gases that control circulation, mood, digestion, healing…

Modern science is only just catching up.

In Chinese medicine, this was always understood as Qi.

We didn’t lose the concept.
We lost the translation.

I’ve explored this in my latest podcast + newsletter.

If you’re ready to see the body differently start here.

Here’s to the women who grow up together, hold each other through life’s storms, and never let go.

Some friendships are written into your life story.

We met when we were just 11 years old, two girls with no idea what life would hold. Since then we’ve walked through every chapter together the messy ones, the joyful ones, the ones that changed us forever.

You’ve been there through it all… the growing up, the heartbreaks, the laughter that made us cry, the moments when life felt impossible and the ones when everything felt wide open.

Today, on International Women’s Day, I want to honour you.

Right now you are walking through one of the hardest chapters life can bring, and I want you to know this, you are not walking it alone. I am with you the same way we’ve always been with each other since we were little girls trying to figure the world out.

Your strength, your humour, your kindness and your heart have shaped my life more than you probably realise.

I love you.
I appreciate you.
And I will always be beside you, no matter what chapter comes next.

Some friendships aren’t just part of your life.
They are your life story.

Happy International Women’s Day to my oldest and dearest friend. 🤍

When I first discovered Yin & Yang theory, it changed the way I understood my own IBS.

I stopped asking:
“Why is my body broken?”

And started asking:
“Is my system overheated?”
“Am I depleted?”
“Am I holding dampness?”
“Is stress pushing everything upward?”

In this podcast short, I explain how Chinese face and body diagnosis helps us read these patterns without invasive testing.

Your face isn’t random.
Your body shape isn’t random.
Your symptoms aren’t random.

They follow patterns.

And when you understand the pattern, healing becomes much clearer.

From IBS to Acupuncturist: Why I See Chronic Illness Differently

I didn’t become an acupuncturist because I liked needles.

I became one because my body forced me to look deeper.

Years of IBS.
Digestive chaos.
Being told it was “just stress.”

What I discovered through Chinese medicine changed everything.

We don’t separate the gut from the emotions.
We don’t separate the nervous system from digestion.
We don’t treat symptoms in isolation.

In this first episode of the Learn to Heal Podcast, I share:

• My own journey with IBS
• What acupuncture training actually involves
• Why Chinese medicine sees the body as an ecosystem
• And why chronic illness is never random

If you’ve ever felt dismissed, misunderstood, or stuck with long-term symptoms this episode is for you.
