It’s all change on the Powertwin front! The Powertwin 21+ has now been replaced by an upgraded version: the Powertwin 21 XP5. It is effectively the same device as its predecessor ie 2,100mW of power with 21 diodes, and all the same programmes, with a few changes to increase its user friendliness:

* Has a new large contrast-rich colour display for setting and showing parameters ie laser output, mode of operation and therapy time with automatic time and dosage calculator.

* Can be used optionally with a Samsung tablet using MKW LASER PRAXIS treatment software using a Bluetooth interface. With a client and patient manager, therapy management, documentation, extensive frequency database with the option of setting up own frequencies, frequency bands, and indications with therapy programmes.

The original Powertwin 21 (1,050mW) is still available for purchase, though the Powertwin 21+ is no longer available due to the new upgrade.

LASER THERAPY FOR EQUINE LAMINITIS

Laminitis is inflammation of the dermis of the hoof, generally characterised by an ultimate decreased capillary perfusion within the laminae which is triggered by a metabolic disorder resulting from incorrect feeding, severe diseases and even medications. Generally both forelegs are affected. It is a very painful condition, and noradrenaline released as a result of the pain potentiates further vasoconstriction within the laminae causing more ischemic necrosis to the laminar tissue, perpetuating this destructive viscious cycle, eventually leading to rotation of the hoof bone.

In summary the pathophysiology of laminitis involves inflammation, increased production of lamellar enzymes, and pain.

Laser therapy has the effect of inhibiting inflammation, promoting perfusion and alleviating pain. When applied to the coronary band, laser therapy has a significant influence on the circulatory pattern of the entire foot. Analgesics which put a strain on the metabolism can be reduced or stopped altogether.

LASER TREATMENT REGIME USING THE POWERTWIN 21 AND 21+ CLASS 3B INFRARED BIOSTIMULATIVE LASERS

Total laser treatments: 7-14
Treatments per week: 3-7
Dose: 2-6 J/cm2
Powertwin 21 (1,050mW) : 0:40-2:00 / area
Powertwin 21+ (2,100mW) : 0:20 -1:00 min / area

Laser therapy should be administered throughout the region of the coronary band and heels. In the acute phase this could initially be administered twice a day, with the frequency tapering off as the laminitis condition is resolved.

LASER THERAPY FOR WOUND HEALING AND SCAR NEUTRALISATION

Laser therapy promotes wound healing and can normalise and accelerate delayed wound healing. You can use laser therapy on fresh and chronic wounds as well as old and already scarred wounds. All types of wounds can be treated: fresh cuts, lacerations, tears and abrasions as well as old wounds that are not healing.

In the event of surgery, laser therapy can be of benefit:

1) Pre-operatively to alleviate pain
2) Post-operatively to prevent wound oedema and to speed up or activate wound healing.
3) To prevent the formation of scars.

A treatment protocol for wounds using the Powertwin would be:

Daily treatment of 4-6 J/cm2.
With the Powertwin 21+ : 0:40 - 1:00 min / area
With the Powertwin 21 : 1:20 - 2:00 mins / area

The Powertwin 21+ has a significant advantage over other 3B lasers - i.e. its interchangeable fibre-optic comb which ensures that most of the laser energy is absorbed into the skin of furry animals, and not impeded by the fur which simply reflects it.

This video shows how easy it is to change between attachments - from the flat adaptor for hairless skin, to the laser comb for furry animals, to the point adaptor for laser acupuncture, or work on trigger points, or eg on the gums.

Fur and hair impede the absorption of laser energy into the skin. The Powertwin 21+ laser comb attachment with 21 fibre-optic wave-guides avoids this problem...

Here I’m using the Powertwin 21+ on my cat. He’s not always the most well behaved when being poked and prodded, but he was very good in this instance and tolerated it well.

2 Joules/cm2 of energy was delivered over an area of 55cm2 in just 33 seconds. The high power of the Powertwin 21+ laser means fast treatment times - and less time for a pet to get grumpy 🙂

This is a new fibre-optic waveguide which converts the LAX laser pen into a mini laser system by increasing the probe size to 1cm wide from 3mm.

Useful for working on trigger point areas, and small areas such as inside the mouth of larger animals, or areas of scar tissue etc.

Our CryOmega portable cryotherapy device for freezing off small superficial lesions (on skin or in the mouth) now comes with a free A3 waiting room poster.

A few seconds of nitrous oxide spray from the CryOmega device is often all that is required for complete removal of many small skin tags, warts and small cysts and adenomas. The lesions slough off over the next few days and heal well without further treatment - though occasionally another spray treatment is required for larger/deeper lesions.

It's a great cost-effective service to offer clients during routine appointments since general anaesthetic/ sutures are not required and no preparation time is needed.

The CryOmega device contains around 40-50 x 5 second treatments and is disposed of once empty. It lasts for 6 months once activated.
