National Eye Health Week 2025.

Sight over Sixty.
Our vision steadily declines as we age so it’s no surprise that poor vision is a major contributory factor to falls in the over-60s. Around one in three adults over 65 who live at home have at least one fall a year, and about half of these will experience falls more frequently. Three quarters of older people who suffer a fall as a result of poor vision had a visual impairment that was easily correctable. This could be as simple as getting a new prescription for your glasses or having cataract surgery.

Regular sight tests are important for everyone to keep your eyes and vision healthy. Sight tests are free for the over 60s as they are paid for by the NHS.

National Eye Health Week 2025. Your eye health is extremely important, here are some things that can affect the health of your eyes.

Studies show that what we eat can affect our vision. Antioxidants can help to prevent retinal damage. One anti-oxidant which is hugely beneficial is lutein.
Foods recommended for eye health include:

-Broad leaf greens such as kale and spinach
-Brightly coloured fruit and veg such as corn, carrots, orange sweet peppers and oranges
-Oily fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel
-Broccoli
-Eggs

Lack of exercise contributes significantly to several eye conditions, particularly amongst people aged 60 and over. Exercise may reduce the risk of sight loss from narrowing or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to serious health conditions which can have a detrimental effect on your eye health.

After ageing, smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing macular degeneration. Smoking also increases your risk of developing cataract

Protecting your eyes from the sun is very important and should not be underestimated. Under no circumstances should you ever look at the sun directly. Your sunglasses should have the CE mark on them which ensures that they are giving you the right level of ultraviolet protection.

We are always striving to provide you with the highest standard of eye care, which is why we’ve integrated advanced technologies like the OptoMap and OCT into your eye exams. These state-of-the-art tools allow us to take a deeper look into your eye health and ensure that your vision stays crystal clear for years to come.
What is OptoMap?
The OptoMap provides a wide-angle, high-definition image of the retina, capturing up to 80% of its surface in one panoramic view. This non-invasive, quick, and comfortable process helps us detect issues such as:
• Retinal detachments
• Macular degeneration
• Glaucoma
• Early signs of diabetes or high blood pressure
With OptoMap, we can often detect conditions long before they affect your vision, giving us the opportunity to start treatment early.
What is OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)?
The OCT is like an MRI for your eyes, providing us with highly detailed, cross-sectional images of your retina. This technology allows us to look beneath the surface, helping us detect and monitor conditions like:
• Glaucoma: By measuring optic nerve damage
• Diabetic Retinopathy: Through detailed views of blood vessel health
• Macular Degeneration: By monitoring retinal layers for early changes
OCT is fast, painless, and highly precise, ensuring that no detail of your eye health is overlooked.
Why Are These Tools Important for You?
Both OptoMap and OCT allow us to take a proactive approach to your eye health, helping us identify and address problems at their earliest stages—often before symptoms appear. This means better outcomes and peace of mind for you.
We are committed to providing you with the best care possible. By incorporating these advanced tools into your routine eye exams, we can better protect your vision and help you maintain healthy eyes for life.
OptoMap is available at our practices in Polesworth, Solihull, Church Stretton and Barnards Green. OCT is available in our practices at Solihull and Church Stretton.
