Protect Your Baby from Whooping Cough! 🍼

Having a baby? Midwives are urging you to get vaccinated against whooping cough during pregnancy.
This weekend, it was announced that a baby had died of whooping cough after its mother did not receive the vaccine.

Whooping cough is a serious infection that can cause long bouts of coughing and choking, making it hard to breathe. Vaccination during pregnancy passes immunity to your baby, protecting them until they receive their own vaccination at eight weeks old.

Get vaccinated around the time of your mid-pregnancy scan, usually at 20 weeks, but you can have it from 16 weeks.
Let's protect our little ones! 💙

As a practice we are actively seeking to identify our Military Veteran patients who have served in the UK Armed Forces and their family members of Military Veterans to ensure they receive any support they may need.

This includes all Military Veterans and Reservists. You only have to have served one day in the armed forces.

We have a questionnaire for Military Veterans or their immediate family members, it is very simple to complete.

To access the questionnaire you can scan the below QR code, call into the practice or follow the link below

If you have not already, it's important to register with an NHS GP surgery as soon as possible and tell them you served in the UK armed forces so they can add it to your medical record. This includes the:

🟢British Army
🟢Royal Navy
🟢Royal Air Force
🟢Royal Marines
🟢Merchant Navy

Registering as soon as you leave the armed forces instead of waiting until you need treatment means you may be able to access treatment faster.
When you register with an NHS GP surgery, it's important to give them any information you received from your military medical officer. This will help your GP to better understand your health, including any health problems related to your service. It will also help make sure you're referred to dedicated services for veterans, where appropriate.

8th – 14th Know Your Numbers Week (Blood Pressure UK)

Right now, 5 million UK adults aged 18-64 may have undiagnosed high blood pressure – increasing their risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. Many don’t even know it. That’s why getting a simple blood pressure check at home could literally be a lifesaver.

High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” – no symptoms, just risk. But knowing your numbers gives you the power to act – whether that’s eating less salt, being more active, or starting medication if needed. Age doesn’t matter. Everyone should Know Their Numbers!

Check your blood pressure checked at your GP practice or local pharmacy.

1st- 30th Urology Awareness month

1 in 5 people in the UK are impacted by bladder problems. 1 in 3 women are living with bladder leakage. With an ageing population, we expect this figure to continue to rise in the coming decade.

From overactive bladder and urge incontinence, to stress incontinence, mixed incontinence, overflow incontinence and many more; there are lots of people who experience bladder leakage. It can be for many reasons. Some females may experience bladder leakage during menopause or after child birth. Some people who have been treated for urology cancers including bladder cancer or prostate cancer may experience bladder leakage. For some people experiencing urinary tract infections, bladder leakage may occur. Lots of people in the UK need to use continence products including catheters and urostomy bags and may deal with leakage issues.

Bladder leakage can impact all aspects of a person’s life. There is also a significant impact on the health service.

Emergency alert test 7 September: Advice for survivors of domestic abuse

Emergency Alerts is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby. In an emergency, such as severe flooding, fires or extreme weather, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe.

On Sunday 7 September at 3pm, UK Government will be testing emergency alert system (EAS) for the second-ever nationwide test.
The test causes a mobile phone or tablet to:
▪️ make a loud siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds, even if it's set on silent,
▪️ It may also cause a device to vibrate or read out the alert.
▪️ A message will appear on your screens making it clear the alert is only a test.

Find out more about the Emergency Alerts on GOV.UK. Emergency Alert Test: Frequently Asked Questions - GOV.UK

Advice for survivors

If you are affected by domestic abuse and have a concealed mobile phone from your abuser, you may not wish the sound of the alert to draw attention to your phone.
How you opt out depends on your device.
Full instructions telling you how to opt out are available at [https://www.gov.uk/alerts/opting-out]

Support for you

If domestic abuse is happening to you, it's important to tell someone and remember you're not alone.
If you do not feel safe or believe there is an immediate threat, call 999.

Other ways to get support:
▪️ Women can call The Freephone National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge on 0808 2000 247 for free at any time, day or night. The staff will offer confidential, non-judgemental information and support
