This hit me right in the feels...
Posted by my trainning provider for Psychotherapy regarding their stance on Anti-oppressive practice.
Anti-oppressive practice means recognising oppression and working to rebalance the power dynamics, in this instance between client and therapist.
In other words, acknowledging it's the client who is the expert of their life - we as therapists are the companions who walk beside them until they get to where they want to go.
This beautiful ethos also sums up my stance as a massage therapist.
I don't think of clients coming to me to be 'fixed' they come to enter a place that allows for space, understanding, processing and healing.
Whatever is going on for you in your body or mind right now is not 'wrong', you're not broken.
The chronic pain, stress, anxiety - it's a byproduct of your environment. They are mental and physical reactions to the world you live in.
Sometimes, you can't change that environment, and sometimes, you just need a little space, or a little nudge to help you understand your environment.
And sometimes you just need space to close the door to the outside world, take off your mask and get back in touch with your body and mind. π
