Is There Anything Else I Should Do If I Have Thick Toenails?

“Proper care goes beyond careful nail cutting. Someone with thick nails due to an underlying medical condition like diabetes or nail fungus should also soak their feet once a week and use a medium grit nail file to file down any excess thickness,” advises Correa. “You should also apply anti-fungal oils that promote elasticity to restore the nail back to its normal state.”

🍁🍂🍁 Autumn Treat Your feet 🍁🍂🍁

There is no doubt that our feet do a lot of heavy lifting (or should that be, heavy walking!) which means that they deserve a good pampering from time to time. Whether you want to heal cracked heels with a scrub, soften with a soak, moisturise with a mask, or smooth with a moisturiser, your feet will thank you for the TLC you give to them.

With autumn now in our midst, you might like to try these autumn-inspired home recipes that will be a total treat for your weary feet. This foot treatment is as effective as any you can get from a spa and is easy to do at home using everyday ingredients.

🍏 ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) Foot Soak🍏

Start off your at-home foot treatment with this foot soak. The ACV can help to dissolve dead skin that causes cracked heels while also killing germs. Do this 2-3 times a week to soften the skin and prepare it for the foot scrub.

Simply pour ¼ cup of ACV in a tub of warm water and soak your feet in the mixture for about ten minutes before moving on to the scrub.

How to take care of cuticles

The easiest way to care for them is to soak your foot in soapy, warm water for around 10 minutes every few days. This helps soften the cuticle and keeps your nails clean. You can also apply cuticle oil and a massage cream. Moisturize your cuticles regularly to prevent dryness and cracking.

Nail matrix

Your nail matrix is where your fingernails or toenails form. A healthy nail matrix is essential for healthy nails. A variety of conditions and injuries can damage your nail matrix. But in many cases, your nail matrix will heal with proper care.

What does my nail matrix do?

Your nail matrix creates new cells that become your fingernails or toenails. About 90% of your nail growth comes from your germinal matrix. Your sterile matrix is responsible for the remaining 10% of cells that make up your fingernails and toenails, but is more important in keeping your nail attached to the underlying skin.

What are common signs of nail matrix problems?

Any change to the appearance or texture of one or more of your nails could be a sign of a nail matrix problem. If you have nail matrix damage or a condition affecting your nail matrix, your nails may have:
Dents (large or small).
Horizontal ridges or lines.
Pain or soreness.
Splits or cracks.
Spots or streaks of color.
Texture changes, such as becoming thicker or crumbly.
It can be difficult to tell the difference between a harmless nail change and one that requires treatment. If you notice any change to your fingernails or toenails, see a healthcare provider. They can determine the cause and recommend treatment, if needed.

Callus
In a callus, this protective response takes the form of a diffuse, broad-based patch of hardened skin. The technical term for a callus is tyloma. Calluses commonly form on the hands of manual workers such as farmers and construction workers. On the feet, calluses often form on the bottom of the heel and the ball of the foot. Anyone who walks or runs a lot can develop calluses on their feet.

Corns are much more localized, are generally thicker, and can be quite hard. They tend to take on a conical appearance, and are almost exclusively found on the feet. The technical term for corns is helomas or clavi. In some patients they take on a dry, waxy look, sometimes even appearing translucent.

How do you treat curled toenails ?

Warm soaks and proper nail trimming may do the trick, but sometimes it's best to see a foot specialist right away. The medical term for this painful condition is onychocryptosis. It develops, usually on the big toe, when a corner of the toenail curves down and digs into the skin.
