Why love matters

Love matters for humans on a profound level because it fulfills fundamental emotional, psychological, and even physiological needs.

Firstly, love provides a sense of belonging and connection. Humans are social beings, and forming deep emotional bonds with others fosters a sense of community and support, which is crucial for overall well-being. Love strengthens relationships, whether familial, romantic, or platonic, creating a network of support during both joyful and challenging times.

Secondly, love contributes to emotional stability and mental health. Feeling loved and valued boosts self-esteem and reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation. It provides a sense of security and comfort, allowing individuals to navigate life's uncertainties with greater resilience. Research has shown that people in loving relationships tend to experience lower levels of stress and anxiety.

Furthermore, love enhances physical health. Positive emotions associated with love, such as happiness and contentment, have been linked to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, and strengthened immune function. Moreover, the act of expressing love through physical affection, such as hugging or kissing, releases oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone," which promotes bonding and feelings of trust.

Trauma, often resulting from distressing events, can have profound impacts on individuals, affecting their mental and emotional well-being.

However, within the realm of adversity lies the concept of post-traumatic growth, wherein individuals not only cope with trauma but also experience personal development and resilience. Counselling plays a pivotal role in this transformative process by providing a supportive space for individuals to explore their experiences, express emotions, and develop coping mechanisms.

With the support of a counsellor, the journey from trauma to post-traumatic growth is collaborative, supportive, and facilitates healing and personal growth.

The Dorset Practice offers low cost counselling from £25 per session (50 mins)
