One small act of kindness may be all someone needs today on World Kindness Day 13th November

Doing something nice for others isn’t only good for them — it can be good for you, too!

World Kindness Day is a reminder of the chance to think of unique ways to perform acts of kindness.

Celebrating kindness and the benefits we derive from this core aspect of the human condition is valuable.

It reminds us that we are neither alone in our lives nor do we live in a world where goodness is not apparent

Your act of kindness to someone today, and everday, could be the boost they needed.

How lovely is this
Movement and connection are so important in maintaining our mental health. Lets not let either our mental or physical health suffer as we grow older.

In a society that is moving towards relying on technology more and more, these could be 2 vital components that we start to loose in our lives.

Encouraging anyone to move more and connect with other humans more is, I feel, something we should all be encouraging, especially with our younger generation, it may be too late for them when they become older, they will have lost the ability to move and connect with others, and I see this as becoming a major contributor to declining mental health in our society.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling that helps keep you safe, everyone feels anxiety.

If you didn’t have any anxiety at all, you wouldn’t look both ways before you crossed the street.

You wouldn’t get a fight-or-flight response when in threatening or dangerous situations.

Anxiety functions as an alarm or warning signal to let us know that dangers lurk ahead so we can protect ourselves

Like all feelings it comes in response to what’s going on for us or what we think is going on.

However for some people their hypersensitivity to threat or danger means the feeling of anxiety is ever present and then it does become a problem for them.

Anxiety is not the problem, it helps us deal with life’s challenges.

However if life is like a constant challenge then anxiety can start to become a problem, rather than an occasional feeling.

Has anxiety become a problem for you?
Counselling could help manage returning anxiety to a feeling that comes and goes like other feelings you have.

What do you turn to when your feeling low or not quite yourself?

I always turn to the chocolate, sometimes that’s good, it soothes me, cheers me up, makes me feel better.

But there are times when I might keep turning to the chocolate and then I start to feel bad about myself, disappointed in myself and my critical voice gets very loud.

People who struggle with anxiety often turn to what we call safety behaviours, things that make them feel safe and reduce their anxious feelings.

But if they start to rely on these safety behaviours they can make things worse instead of better and anxiety continues.

Here are some safety behaviours that people with anxiety might turn to time and time again not realising that instead of helping them get over their anxious feelings they are collaborating with their anxiety, because all the while they turn to safety behaviours they never find out if they can tolerate the anxiety or get through the anxious moment without them.

Avoidance
Alcohol
Drugs
Medication
Worry
Googling
Never doing things alone
Asking for reassurance
Comfort eating
Always having an escape plan
Superstitious rituals
Perfectionism
Constantly checking in with others

Do you recognise any of these, do you turn to them often to help reduce your anxious feelings?

In counselling we work out how you can manage life without the safety behaviours.
This is part of your therapy to reduce your anxiety and manage life without constant anxious feelings.

One of the most important things I have learnt from being a counsellor is

Keep connected with others

Isolation increases anxiety and depression.

Keeping connected with people can be one of the hardest things to do when you feel overwhelmed with life, but it is sooo important.

Don’t cut yourself off.

💚 It may just be a 👋via text
💚 Allowing someone to pop their head round the door and check in with you
💚 Sitting in the same room not saying anything
💚 Writing a letter
💚 Playing a video game with someone

This connection will help you feel you are not on your own coping.

You will find over time it will get easier to be around people.

Whatever you do don’t stop connecting with others, however small that connection might be

How can talking about something change things?
I don’t really know the science behind it, but I know it to be true because I have experienced it myself.

For years and years I had a reoccurring dream that made no sense to me. It was a vivid dream and it always stayed with me a few days after I had it.

Then at age 18 I spoke with someone about it and realised it was a memory, not a dream.
From that day forward I never had the dream again.

My unresolved issue had been resolved

That’s what counselling can do for you.

If you have things in your head that you’ve never spoken about before and don’t feel there is someone you can talk with, a counsellor is the ideal person to talk to.

Everything you tell a counsellor is confidential and you can share your ‘stuff’ in a safe space with someone who will know how to manage your reactions.

If you have thoughts that have been causing you distress or uncertainty why don’t you book a session with me and we will clear your head of those thoughts and allow you to move on.
