20 Reiki Masters. One sacred day.
The Retreat New Forest has been home to the Richard Ellis School of Reiki since its very beginning—a place where the Usui Shiki Ryoho tradition has been practiced, taught, and lived.
To gather here with fellow masters, sharing practice, insight, and deep healing, is such a gift.
At a time when Reiki is often diluted, coming together in this space to celebrate our lineage, honor its mystic roots, and uphold the integrity of our practice felt especially meaningful.

Twenty Reiki Masters gathered for my recent Reiki Day at The Retreat New Forest
We shared insights, practiced together, and experienced deep healing.
In a time when Reiki is often being diluted, it felt powerful to honor the mystic order of Usui Shiki Ryoho—to stand in its tradition with humble, heart-centered masters, and to honour our lineage.

Gasshō means “two hands coming together.”
In Reiki, it is a foundational posture of presence, humility, and unity.
We bring the palms together in front of the heart, fingers pointing upward, in what many recognize as a prayer position.

This is not a religious act, but a gesture of reverence—toward life, the present moment, and the energy that flows through all things.

How to Practice
1. Find a comfortable seated position.
Let the spine be upright but not rigid. Feel the sit bones rooted.
2. Bring your hands together in Gasshō.
Palms touching, fingers pointing up, thumbs lightly resting against the chest at the level of the heart.
3. Close your eyes and begin to observe your breath.
No need to change it—simply feel it.
Inhale…
Exhale…
Notice the sensation of breath entering the body and leaving it.
Notice the warmth between your palms.
4. Let your attention rest lightly on the space between the hands.
Over time, you may feel heat, vibration, or a pulsing sensation.
This is the awareness of energy—ki—awakening through presence.
5. If your mind wanders, gently return to the breath or the feeling of the hands.
Allow each breath to return you to this moment.
Back to stillness.
Back to the heart.

The concept of distant healing is truly fascinating and profound. It's not about projecting energy across a physical distance, but rather about transcending the illusion of separateness and distance. When we engage in distant healing, we're not two separate entities - the sender and the receiver - but rather, we're expressions of the same universal energy or Source. In this sacred space, our perception of time and space shifts. Time becomes fluid, enabling us to address past traumas and bolster future intentions. Space, as we understand it, collapses, underscoring the inherent interconnectedness of all beings. The concept of duality, of "I" healing "you," dissolves, reminding us that we're all part of the same whole. This is the beauty of distant healing. It's a reminder of our unity, our shared Source, and our ability to support and heal each other, regardless of physical distance.

Was Takata Telling the Truth?

For years, the genesis of Reiki seemed fairly clear, and the main players were well known (Usui, Hayashi, Takata). Mrs. Takata's origin story was the first version to reach the West. We all know her story in which she told about Mikao Usui such as that he was Christian, an ordained minister, head and teacher of the Christian Doshisha School in Kyoto, resigned after his students questioned his faith, and that he started a quest how Jesus could heal through the laying on of hands, etc. etc.

In December 1991, Doshisha answered on question about their history stating that a Mikao Usui could not be found in their archives. In 1992, this news spread around the Reiki community after which Takata's story generally got labeled ‘incorrect’. Some Reiki Masters, however, could not accept the idea that Takata had not told the truth and started their own research on the history of Usui.

In 1993, one of them, Elizabeth Latham, had a mystical dream showing her an unfamiliar Japanese face saying, “I am the man you are looking for. I am Usui”. She went to Doshisha herself, and there she discovered that the man she saw in her dream was Tokio Yokoi, and that Takata was telling the life and work of this Tokio Yokoi but named him in the narrative Mikao Usui. After many years, Elizabeth concluded for herself that Yokoi had spread Reiki under a pseudonym: Usui. She wrote her findings in a book published in 2023: The Samurai Reiki Master.

Jojan Jonker heard from Elizabeth herself her findings late 2022, early 2023, and her story set off all his scholarly alarm bells; have we all overlooked something? The last year, he studied the life and work of Tokio Yokoi, and asked the question whether Yokoi could have required the necessary knowledge to originate the healing practice Reiki as we know it today.

He will present his findings in the Circle of Scholars’ presentation on March 16, 2024. Come and listen with an open heart, and bring pen and paper because you will hear a lot of new information.

Bio: Dr. Jojan Jonker, Netherlands. Jojan graduated in Computer Science in 1986. He worked for many years as ICT consultant. Since 1998, he is a practicing Reiki Master. In 2010, he graduated in Interrelogious Spirituality and in 2016, he took on his doctoral degree within the field of Religious Studies. As PhD, Jonker intends to operate as a defender of truth. But what is truth? We will never know that as one powerful understanding about everything. But truth does come near in human searching and wandering, in longing and finding, as Mystery that both lures us and whispers to us. In this sense, true knowing is a promise fulfilled daily: in love, in forgiving, in practicing Reiki.
