Fab afternoon yesterday with fellow physiotherapists and Pilates teachers, Lorraine, Ros and Lucy, having a ‘play’ on Lucy’s reformer. Quite a challenge but felt completely safe under Lucy’s expert guidance. If anyone is thinking of trying reformer Pilates, I’d fully recommend Lucy Purrier. She offers 1:1 sessions in Broadstone and at her home near Ashley Cross.

🌟Come and try a class for £5 (£11 thereafter), aimed at beginner and intermediate levels.
🌟No previous Pilates experience needed, all you need is a mat!
🌟Low impact exercise class building core strength, balance, coordination and flexibility under the expert guidance of a Chartered Physiotherapist.

Availability:

Mondays 9:30- FULL
Wednesdays 9:30- FULL
Wednesdays 10:40- 1 space
Thursdays 10:30- FULL
Thursdays 6pm- 1 space
Thursdays 7:15pm- 3 spaces

Thank you to those who’ve joined me with the December planking challenge 💪 it’s not too late to jump on board 😁
Here’s some tips to keep you motivated or get started…

1. Make it easy
Start small and build up. It doesn’t need to be perfect. Think about where you’ll do it each day. You don’t need to wear gym stuff 👌

2. Habit stacking
Attach a new habit to an existing habit. Eg ‘after I’ve brushed my teeth I’ll do a plank’ 🪥

3. Identify the WHY
We’ll only change our behaviour if there is a good enough reason. Don’t do it for me, do it for you!! ❤️

4. Track your progress
Make a tick chart or a note on your phone. We all love a streak ✅

5. Plan for setbacks
Expect a dip in motivation or just ‘life’ getting in your way. Set your minimum for the week and be realistic. Set backs are part of the process and not to be viewed as failing 😌

December challenge 🎄
Try a plank for one minute per day. Set a timer for one minute and off you go! Take rests if you need to, then try and restart the exercise. 💪💪💪

Over the past few weeks we’ve been doing a lot of planking!!! A fantastic way to build strength and endurance of the abdominals and shoulder girdle.

There is also evidence showing that performing planks can help to lower blood pressure (isometric exercises where you hold the position, neither lengthening or shortening muscles are the most effective in lowering blood pressure)

Here are some options for different levels…

1. The hover (beginner)- from 4 point kneeling, hover your knees slightly off the mat

2. Straight arm plank (intermediate)- try to align shoulders over wrists and keep your hips in line with your spine

3. Forearm plank (intermediate)- align elbows under shoulders, keep the breastbone lifted so you stay strong around the shoulder girdle

4. Leg pull (advanced)- in the plank position lift one leg. Think about lengthening the leg, rather than trying to lift it high

Remember to BREATHE 😆

We’ve been talking about BALANCE this week and its importance in preventing falls.

40-49 yrs- 40sec 7 sec
50-59 yrs- 37 sec. 5 sec
