Great post from friend and colleague πŸ’•

Have you ever noticed that when you’re already on edge, everything feels amplified?

When we are dysregulated, our nervous system is on high alert. Lack of sleep, too much screen time, increasing demands and the general noise of the world can create the perfect storm. Our tolerance narrows, and small things suddenly feel big.

This links to something called the Window of Tolerance; the zone where we can think clearly, manage emotions, and respond rather than react. When we move outside of it, we lose space and objectivity.

At these times, our β€œfront brain” (the thinking, reasoning part) goes offline, and our survival brain takes over. The amygdala (our internal alarm system) senses threat and activates fight, flight or freeze. It happens fast and often draws on old, subconscious experiences.

What is within our control is how we support ourselves back into regulation through things like rest, boundaries, breathing, movement, or connection.

When the front brain comes back online, we regain choice.

If this resonates with you and you’d like support in understanding your or others' responses, increasing emotional regulation, or expanding your Window of Tolerance, I offer a safe and compassionate space to explore this together.

Feel free to message me directly or get in touch to arrange an initial counselling enquiry.
