I once came across a poignant quote that deeply resonated with me -
“One day you will tell people how you pulled yourself out of the ocean when you couldn’t even swim”
I think to actually pinpoint exactly HOW is a big ask, because it was a very gradual process, with plenty of rise and fall.
However, learning the art of introspection was a key turning point, getting into the routine of asking myself “is what I’m feeling mine?” My beige flag is feeling everything for everyone else so deeply, being so careful that no one gets hurt, no one, that is, except me.
Another valuable tactic I adopted was to challenge the validity of intrusive negative thoughts that arose, asking myself “is this a fact? or my belief?”
As a counsellor, you will never hear me give you advice. I truly believe that we all have the ability to pull ourselves out of the ocean. What works for me might not work for you so it’s important we always work from your perspective. Instead, I will give you a safe, confidential place to explore and challenge the thoughts that are uncomfortable, speak them out loud and allow yourself feel how that thought landed when spoken aloud.
Ideas explored in our session are not directives but avenues that you can choose to explore, you may choose to not act on them, but what it does is provide you with a choice.
