The celebration and remembrance of VE Day marks 81 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe, as the United Kingdom remembers the day the war against N**i Germany finally came to an end. 🇬🇧
Happy VE Day ❤️🐾
On 8th May 1945, after almost six years of unimaginable loss, sacrifice, destruction, fear, and resilience, Britain and its Allies formally accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender.
At 3pm, Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced to the nation over the radio:
“My dear friends, this is your hour. We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing.”
And rejoice they did.
Church bells rang across the country for the first time in years.
Crowds flooded the streets.
Strangers embraced.
Families gathered around radios.
Flags lined windows.
Music echoed through towns and cities exhausted by war.
After years of rationing and uncertainty, people celebrated not just victory… but survival.
The late Queen Elizabeth II, then Princess Elizabeth, famously slipped quietly into the crowds alongside Princess Margaret to celebrate amongst the people — sharing in a moment that united a battered nation.
But whilst VE Day is a celebration of victory, courage, resilience, and freedom… for us, it is also about remembrance.
At Hero Paws, we stand not only for the heroes who served on two legs… but also those who served on four.
The military working dogs.
The messenger dogs.
The patrol dogs.
The rescue dogs.
The horses that carried soldiers through battlefields.
The pigeons that delivered lifesaving messages through enemy fire.
The countless animals pulled into mankind’s wars without choice, yet stood beside us with unwavering loyalty and devotion.
They did not understand politics.
They did not understand hatred.
They only understood duty, trust, and standing beside their humans until the very end.
Many never came home.
Many were forgotten by history.
Many served in silence with no medals, no recognition, and no voice.
Today, we honour them all.
We honour the soldiers who fought through mud, blood, devastation, and loss so future generations could live in peace.
We honour the police, military, emergency service, and service animals of today
