When we're wired to look for threats and see negativity before positivity, it can be difficult to feed the wolf of love. Practicing compassion and highlighting positives is just one simple step towards letting go of hate and embracing love. 'Fighting fire with fire just creates a bigger fire'

Ever been caught up in keeping up with the latest fads, the best material possessions or what is popular but not always the right thing to do? Well, I certainly have. As we grow and develop an empathic understanding of the world we live in, so our goals should change and come from a place where we're intrinsically happy due to our actions. Observing our own intent is a key aspect of identifying our need or want for something. If I can check in with my intent and observe my body and mind, I can often identify actions which come from my heart, compared to those which come from my head. For me, mindfulness practices help significantly in identifying the unnecessary noise and sitting with my truth, however easy or difficult this may be.

Do you have a frozen view of yourself? What contributes to this view? Unfortunately as we grow, so do our imaginary rules for ourselves. This rule book we create can often lead to barrier after barrier. Understanding we are the sum of many parts can lead to an overall acceptance that we do not live in a rigid world, we live in an evolving world in which we can choose to accept our early perceptions, or, we can choose to create a new rule book.

The sun may shine bright, but it's my darkest day,
I appear physically strong, to keep questions at bay.
I feel happiness and sorrow in equal amounts,
the tide of emotions can be hard to count.
I don't need your help, would you leave me be
no wait, I just can't ask, it isn't me.
My pride is my strength, but often i'm weak,
so take the time and ask, when my days may seem bleak.
With support and a hug, I feel right again,
children, women and yes even men.
For I am the species with such complex needs,
yes I am HUMAN, be HUMAN with me, i'm begging you please.

A poem from Waves of Connection. Support each other, be kind compassionate and considerate.

'You cannot stop the waves, but you can learn how to surf' John Kabat-Zinn

Compassion has been a topic of interest for me over the last few months, showing compassion to ourselves and to others helps build a diverse and productive community. The stumbling block of showing compassion, especially to ourselves, is we first have to admit we have got it wrong. Compassion is not an excuse or a soft approach to life, compassion is an acceptance we're human and without it we cannot thrive.

It would be nice to always make the correct decision, tick the right box and live life without making mistakes, however, in reality life is a roller coaster of ups and downs, a tunnel with many turns. Being around people who hold me accountable, tell me the things I may not want to hear and challenge me to be better is sometimes difficult, but always beneficial.

You don't have to come up with the latest intervention, or go viral on social media in order to facilitate change. Change is a gradual process, the smallest intervention, a smile, empathy or understanding can turn ripples into waves. Change is about understanding yourself, getting to know you.

David Goggins (Can't Hurt Me) talks about holding the accountability mirror up to ourselves and being honest about what we see. Accountability starts from within. Yes, at times we may need to access support in order to move past a stumbling block, but there will also be times when we will need to hold ourselves accountable for our actions and be prepared to change for the good of our future. I don't believe in the statement 'no regrets' because if I say I have no regrets I am implying I have not made mistakes, which I can learn from. Life is a process of regrets, failures, successes, heartbreak, elation, happiness and sorrow. What we do during and after these experiences goes a long way in defining the type of character we are. If this topic is of interest to you, I recommend the book 'Can't Hurt Me'.

We face a very uncertain time, there is no doubt about this. We cannot control many things which are happening and this for many of us will be particularly uncomfortable. At Waves of Connection we have a strong belief, when we go through adverse experiences, we build resilience, learn and grow. In order to do this, we must not be afraid to ask for help, reach out for support and accept, there are things which are going to be out of our control, now and in the future. If you're local to us, need help with shopping, walking pets, a chat on the phone, then please do not hesitate to get in touch. Inch by Inch Mental Health UK are also connecting through video logs, which could prove to be an important anchor for many people. We will not be charging for any service we are called upon to provide in this difficult time.

This is a simple question with a sometimes complex answer, depending on our experiences. In my view, in order to create a supportive environment in which people can progress, we must first create an environment where people are not afraid to be vulnerable. We must access our vulnerabilities in order to fail, progress, ask for help, acknowledge mistakes and take advice. It is therefore logical to assume an environment which accepts vulnerability is an environment which will thrive.

Like the words, we don't always see everything in everyones world, which is why it is so important to be kind rather than cruel, to be patient rather than rushed and spread goodness whenever we can.

If you search for quotes related to anger you're met with a host of phrases which send a message that we should avoid the emotion. Anger is a natural human emotion which allows us to identify what we like and dislike, deal with disappointment, build resilience and find out how we feel about particular experiences. Repressed anger can cause isolation, lead to us losing our sense of self and inhibit connections with others. It is important to find healthy/safe ways of validating and expressing anger in order to avoid rage. With practice, anger can be validated and expressed without harming yourself or others, however, rage can be dangerous as it involves a build up of stress hormones and emotions over an extended period of time. Ultimately rage can lead to an explosion or outburst which bypasses the logical thinking part of the brain. Avoiding anger all together is likely to increase the chance of an outburst of rage.
Note: If you feel your emotions are overwhelming it is always advisable to seek support from an appropriate person/agency.

Gratitude Journal Day 27: Okay, so there is some debate over whether Ghandi did say this however. Ghandhi did state “We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” Who around you has shown you a path which has helped you, teachers, parents, friends etc. Sometimes in life we come across those people who do not tell us what to do or how to behave, they show us, but often we do not take time to reflect and realise the importance of this.

28/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 26: What does it mean to you to show courage? think about this question for a while. Courage is the ability to face fears and overcome stumbling blocks, we simply cannot do this without accessing our vulnerabilities. Take some time to identify who in your life accepts you for your strengths but more importantly your vulnerabilities, show your gratitude and celebrate the fact you have this connection.

26/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 25: Accepting we do not know everything and others may know more than us can sometimes be difficult, especially if we have low self esteem. Learning how to practice gratitude towards those around us who offer a different insight or teach us something new can help build connections and allow us to grow as individuals. Show gratitude for those in your life who teach you something new, don't be afraid to acknowledge what they offer and let go of any pride which may get in the way.

24/01/2020

Gratitude Journal day 24: Looking back can sometimes be difficult, even traumatic, however, if we can show gratitude for the skills we have developed, the experience we have gained and the relationships we have formed despite our hardships, we can find a way forward.

24/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 23: Patience is a skill, which if used correctly can help facilitate growth in both ourselves and others. Think about who has been patient with you, maybe let them know their value and show gratitude for their support.

22/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 22: Today is about acknowledging and celebrating the people in our lives who have walked a different path. Having people around us who have experienced life in a different way to us is helpful. sharing experience, knowledge and ideas is important and facilitates progression. Today, show gratitude for the people in your life who have shown you something new, helped you grow and accept you for who you are.

Balance your body, Balance your mind.

Fantastic to have Rhys from Inch by Inch with us today, some well earned self care on a chilly January morning. Rhys participated in a Surf Therapy session with Waves of Connection at Porthcawl Surf School. We started with a mindfulness activity, before taking to the water for a surf session and ending with a grounding and relaxation. We hope you enjoyed Rhys, we look forward to working with Inch by Inch on future events.

Gratitude Journal Day 21: The saying 'listen to your heart' is not just a phrase used to help us decide what to do in a dilemma. The human body is capable of feeling multiple sensations before our minds even know what's going on. Take some time to identify situations or people that trigger comfortable sensations and make room for them in your life.

20/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 20: Just as we should be grateful for the days with little challenge, we should also show gratitude for challenges. Being challenged helps build resilience, teaches us how to solve problems and allows us to develop an understanding of the resources we need in order to overcome adverse experiences.

19/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 19: Losing ourselves in an activity which meets the conditions of 'Flow' is beneficial to our sense of happiness. In January, find your state of 'Flow' and make time for the activity in your weekly schedule. Finding 'Flow' is not always easy but is sure to stimulate your senses, give you a sense of purpose and calm your mind.

18/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 18: Find yourself focusing on who or what annoys you or makes you angry? Turn the tables and focus on who or what makes you joyful. In January make a list of the joyful activities or people in your life.

18/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 17: Being listened to is what most people desire. In January, reflect on who listens and responds to you, empathises with you and supports you in the way you need. Do you listen passively or actively?

16/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 16: Rest is precious, whilst physical rest is becoming more possible, resting the mind is becoming harder to achieve. Take some time in January and beyond to appreciate the quiet times, the times without technology at your finger tips or constant disruptions. Feeling guilty about having a rest? Remember, our creative thoughts are stimulated during this time, both physical and mental rest is a human necessity.

15/01/2020

Gratitude Journal Day 15: Stuck in a rut? Always coming up against the same challenges and stumbling blocks? As humans we're very good at convincing ourselves things will change, even though we do not pro-actively seek change. In January, think about what you may want to change and remember to show gratitude for this ability.
