This week is OCD Awareness Week ( ), it is a worldwide event that serves to dispel myths about obsessive compulsive disorder. OCD isn’t just about excessive cleaning or checking. It can show up in many other, often invisible, and deeply distressing ways.

Many people live for years without realising they have the condition, often because their symptoms don’t fit the common stereotypes.

OCD (Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder) involves intrusive, unwanted thoughts or fears (obsessions) that create intense anxiety, and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) done to relieve that anxiety. These compulsions aren’t always outward, for some, it’s counting, arranging objects symmetrically, mentally repeating phrases, or needing things to feel ‘just right’.

Relief usually comes only when the compulsion is completed, creating a short-lived sense of calm that reinforces the cycle. This makes OCD an exhausting and debilitating condition, not simply a “quirk” or preference for order.
