What do older people have to say about dignity in their daily lives?

Studies show that dignity and community are key aspects to successful long-term social care.

The factors that older people see as aiding or undermining their sense of dignity can be overarching or very particular. Seemingly small losses in independence or autonomy, such as being unable to stand for long periods of time to go shopping or struggling to bend down to put on shoes, can sometimes be just as impactful as negative interactions with health care workers or an increasing lack of privacy, that can gradually chip away at a person's sense of identity and dignity.

Through close relationships and a sense of community among those living in care, their families and the staff who provide ongoing support, we can work on adapting routines and activities to meet the needs and abilities of older people in care.

A successful care approach also seeks to bridge the gap between the way in which older people with illness and an increasing dependency on others are often spoken about and perceived in care training and practice of social care, and the vibrant lives and personalities of older people in reality.

We want to hear your thoughts. What do you have to say about dignity in later life? What do you see being done well and what do you wish you could change? Let us know in the comments section below.

When a partner, parent or close friend is diagnosed with dementia it can be difficult to suddenly think of yourself as a carer. However, it is always a good idea to be prepared and to establish the care and support networks you may need as their condition progresses.

Starting this process as early as possible, ensures that when things become challenging you and your loved one can continue to live healthy and rewarding lives.

The NHS has provided a helpful guide to the types of support available and the things you may need to consider in your care journey.

We know that relationships are important.

If you've been caring for a loved one for many years, considering a care home can feel like a separation, but that doesn't need to be the case.

We actively encourage families to visit every day, or as often as you can, to engage and socialise as you would at home and to feel like an ongoing part of your loved ones care.

Watch our video to learn more about how we embrace families in our homes.

Conversation is a wonderful way to stay connected and engaged. It is one of our most vital tools in coming to understand one another; sharing histories, personalities, wants and values.

These simple conversation starters can be used as a jumping off point for those who may not know where to begin when the needs or situation of someone we know, or are just getting to know, has changed drastically due to dementia.

Top tips:

Keep conversation flowing with follow up questions, share your own experiences and don’t feel the need to ask everything in one sitting.

A quiet space and minimal distractions will allow for deeper conversation to open up but if specifics are difficult it may help to focus on the feelings brought by certain questions or you can use related pictures and videos to assist you.

Carers Rights Day 2025

Are you a carer?

A carer is someone who willingly takes on the care of a relative or friend who could not manage without support.

Many of the thousands of unpaid carers throughout the UK do not see themselves as carers and are therefore missing out on vital access to the support available or are unaware of their rights as a carer.
