Carers Rights Day 2025

Are you a carer?

A carer is someone who willingly takes on the care of a relative or friend who could not manage without support.

Many of the thousands of unpaid carers throughout the UK do not see themselves as carers and are therefore missing out on vital access to the support available or are unaware of their rights as a carer.

Care comes in all shapes and sizes, from help at home, elderly day care, residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as dual-registered homes which provide for multiple care options so that as needs increase over time, care can adapt to meet them.

You can find out more about the different types of care homes and care home alternatives in Age UK’s helpful guide.

Care homes vary depending on the level of care provided. They range from nursing homes to homes for sufferers of dementia. Find out more from Age UK.

Helping those living with dementia to lead active and engaging lives is just one of the ways we can improve overall wellbeing and quality of life.

Activities help with maintaining mechanical skills, improving mood, reducing frustration, and encouraging social connections, and are part of just living a normal life which, first and foremost is what we strive to provide for our residents.

Watch our video to see how our carers and wellbeing coordinators use activities to bring engagement and joy to everyday life.

Research is essential to finding cures for dementia-causing diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, and improving our understanding of dementia diagnosis, treatment and care.

You can take part in dementia research with Alzheimer's Society. Share your story, contribute vital data or consider new treatments and make a difference for the future of people affected by dementia.

Research studies offer hope that we can one day end the devastation caused by dementia – and research is only possible thanks to the people who take part.

New drugs for slowing cognitive decline have now been approved in the UK.

Two drugs, part of a class of drugs called ‘disease-modifying treatments’, have been approved for use in the treatment of dementia. These new treatments are called Donanemab, and Lecanemab however, they are not available on the NHS.

The new drugs target a protein called amyloid that builds up in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease, working with the body's immune system to remove the protein and slowing the decline in memory and thinking skills of people in the early stages of their diagnosis.

Music can take us back in time, transport us to new places and completely change our mood.

For many years studies have been looking at how music helps improve the lives of those living with dementia and their families.

Instruments are a wonderful way to spark for a long standing passion or a brand new hobby.

Songs can be used to encourage movement and dancing, reduce anxiety and stress.

Even simply creating a playlist of music from memorable moments in life, as someone with dementia or a loved one, can help to reconnect and bring joy when it's needed most.
