Weight loss injections Tirzepatide (Mounjao)

It has been reported in the media today (Monday 23rd June 2025) that GP surgeries can prescribed the weight loss injection tirzepatide (also known as Mounjaro). The NHS guidelines state there is to be a phased introduction, starting with people who are at the highest risk. This is people who have a BMI over 40, and have 4 other health problems from the following list: cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnoea, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.

We have approximately 25 patients who fit these criteria, and there are an estimated 70 patients across the Gordano valley PCN (this includes the practices in Pill, Portishead and Clevedon).

Prescribing tirzepatide includes regularly titrating the doses, and monthly follow ups. To ensure we can do this safely and effectively without impacting our existing services, we will be directly contacting those people who fit the criteria over the next few months to invite them onto the programme.

To calculate your BMI please go here: Calculate your body mass index (BMI) for adults - NHS

From 1st July the NHS will be moving to 5 yearly cervical screening intervals (previously 3 yearly) for all women with a cervix aged 25-64.

If you're due a smear test in the next 3 years, you will still be called within the 3 year window. Only once you have been screened and informed that the next smear will be 5 yearly, will it change over.

Patients will still be invited by the central team, although this will now be through the NHS app first, then a letter if you do not respond.

We will be making every effort to contact our non responders to encourage attendance and answer any questions.

This video explains what you can expect to happen during cervical screening. For more information on cervical screening visit https://www.nhs.uk/cervical-scre...

We are seeing a growing number of urgent prescription requests, which is becoming increasingly difficult to manage alongside routine care. To ensure safe and efficient service for everyone, we kindly ask that patients submit routine prescription requests in good time.

Here are some important reminders:
💊 Routine prescription requests take 3–5 working days to process.
💊 We are unable to accept prescription requests more than 14 days in advance of when medication is due.
💊 If your request is urgent, it must be made in person at the surgery as early as possible.
💊 All prescriptions are sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy.
💊 If your pharmacy is out of stock, they can return the prescription to the NHS cloud system, allowing another pharmacy to dispense it. This does not require further action from the practice.

Your cooperation helps us to manage prescription requests more safely and fairly for all patients. Please plan ahead and request your repeat medications in good time.

More information about prescriptions can be found on our website.

Our online access system (Accurx) is not working and we cannot see you requests. This is a national problem. If you have an urgent medical query, please telephone the surgery on 01275 841630. Please accept our apologies whilst everyone works hard to correct this, and thank you for your patience. Yours faithfully, Dr Thomson
