You may have seen the US open recently stating tennis is the “world’s healthiest sport” and whilst it’s a big claim… there is quite a lot of scientific backing! Two large studies (BJoSM 2016 & MCP 2018) found racket sport players had a 56% reduced chance of cardiovascular disease-related death and an amazing 10 year overall increase in life expectancy. Let’s list some reasons it’s so fab as a sport 🎾
- Mix of sprinting and recovery periods are brilliant for cardiovascular endurance
- Running, jumping, change in direction, use of upper and lower body muscles all benefit bone health and reduce osteoporosis risk
- Improves agility, balance and coordination
- Quick decision making and planning of shots improves cognitive skills
- If able to play outside has benefit of nature - related stress relief and vitamin D production through sun exposure
- Encourages socialising through matches / doubles play
Have a look at your local options for group or individual lessons or drop in sessions. Even a free YouTube video could teach you a lot of the basics including the rules! A lot of places in the UK have public courts which can be free or cheap to play, so grab a racket and have a knock with your friends 🎾💛
