Olive, our star of the month lives with a condition called Elbow Dysplasia, lets explain exactly what that means! 💪🏻

Elbow Dysplasia (ED) is a common orthopaedic condition that some dogs are born with. ED commonly affects large and active breeds but it often goes unnoticed until it causes significant pain. It involves abnormal development of the elbow joint, leading to joint instability, arthritis and chronic pain. Early detection is key to managing this condition and keeping your dog active and pain free 🐶❤️

🐶 Signs to look for: 🐶
🔹 Limping or stiffness, especially after rest
🔹 Reluctance to walk, jump or play
🔹 Lameness in forelimbs
🔹 Swelling around the elbow joint
🔹 Signs of pain when the elbow is touched or moved.

Physiotherapy, laser therapy, and hydrotherapy can all help to manage ED. If you have any concerns about your dog suffering with this condition, please call us and we would be happy to talk about any concerns and how we may be able to help. 🩵

🌟 July Star of the Month - Olive 🌟

Poor Olive suffers with Elbow Dysplasia and had an operation earlier this year to help relive the pain. Olive made a good improvement but in the following weeks post surgery was still limping on her left forelimb. 🤕💔

She was then referred to us at hydro.vet to help with pain management and improving strength and exercise tolerance. 🐶
We started off with regular laser therapy for pain management along with a tailored exercise program to complete at home. Once some strength had been gained, we stated her in the underwater treadmill to continue strengthening the muscles surrounding her elbows and to help improve the range of motion of the joint. 🌊

Olive was very nervous when she started rehab with us, but each week she has massively improved in confidence! She has always completed all of her home exercises, and really enjoys them too. ❤️

We are still working on getting her completely pain free but Olive has earned Star of the Month for overcoming her anxiety in her sessions, and for religiously performing her exercise programme 🩵

⭐️ MASSAGE ⭐️

Osteoarthritis (OA) can cause muscles around the affected joints to become tight and sore as the dog tries to protect itself from pain. Over time this can lead to poor posture and movement adaptations which may cause compensatory issues in the surrounding soft tissues.

Massage can be beneficial to dogs with OA and other joint issues in the following way:

🐾 Helps promote circulation
🐾 Relieves muscle tension
🐾 Stimulates release of endorphins (natural pain killers)
🐾 Increases joint range of movement
🐾 Promotes relaxation

If you think your dog may benefit from massage and physiotherapy treatment then get in touch with us via email or feel free to give us a call to chat directly to one of our rehab team members.

Tips on how to make your home arthritis-friendly 🐶

- Non-slip flooring: Slippy floors such as wood and laminate can be challenging for dogs with arthritis, using rugs and runners can make it easier for them to grip and walk without slipping
- Orthopaedic beds: Providing a bed with ample cushioning helps reduce pressure on the joints
-Ramps or pet steps: Using a ramp or pet stairs can make getting on and off the furniture and in and out the car easier, as well as helping to protect the joints in the front legs from impact when hitting the ground
- Raised bowls: Elevating food and water bowls reduced the strain on your dogs neck and shoulders when eating and drinking
- Good lighting: Ensure that any areas where your dog frequents is well lit to avoid tripping or falling
