What was the thought belief and appreciation of the sun by native American Indians?
Different tribes of Native Americans have diverse beliefs and practices, and different tribes viewed the sun in unique ways. However, some common themes emerge when we look at how the sun was appreciated and revered by various Indigenous peoples across North America and South America.
For many Native American tribes, the sun has a Spiritual symbolism that represents life, power, and the source of all living things.
The sun played a critical role in the Cycles of life and time, the daily cycle of the sun — rising in the east and setting in the west — was often seen as a symbol of birth, death, and rebirth.
The sun was central to various rituals and ceremonies in different cultures, often used to mark significant life events, seasonal changes, and transitions in life.
The Sun Dance one of the most well-known ceremonies involving the sun is the Sun Dance, is practised by tribes.
The sun was not only seen as a symbol of life, but also of healing and strength. In some tribes, the sun’s energy was believed to have medicinal properties.
The sun was also featured in Native American art, storytelling, and visual symbols, it appeared in pottery, jewellery, textiles, and paintings.
