As many of you have realized I have not been able to work on patients during lockdown as I cant work out how to feel tight tissue at a 2m distance. Still working on that. BUT I have been keeping my hands in practice working on this young athlete Emma (also my daughter) who has luckily been locked down in the same household. Lots of athletes have not been able to access their Physio’s so this has been an absolute bonus for her as she has been able to continue her Olympic preparation on the rowing machine, wattbike and in our home made garage gym. With lots of good tissue work, massage, yoga and stretching she is coming out of lockdown in good shape ready to get back in the water on Wednesday. It’s hard to see when people like myself will be able to work again. But this pause has given me time to re read Andy Thomas’s (the guru who engrained his knowledge into me) bible “Yoga, how and why it works” and think about what he would have done at this time to make sure his knowledge was still able to help people. Andy taught us how to diagnose patients by using a simple analysis of the way their body moved into different postions. The patient could then be set their own personal yoga (strong stretching) programme to correct the lack of movement in certain areas. This works fantastically well as a method of self help. Obviously it doesn’t work as fast as human body work BUT it is a great tool for any human to have in their tool box especially in this new world when visiting a Physio or massage therapist isn’t always possible.
