Med3 Music Med3 Music explores mental health wellbeing through music, and has for the last 29 years supported i

Med3 Music was set up in 1993 by social services, and until funds were withdrawn in March 2009,were supported by local authority & managed by Portsmouth Mind. The dismay shown by members and their reaction to the news that the service was no longer being funded prompted the musical professional and the mental health support worker to commit to keeping the service going on an independent basis. Med3 Music set themselves up as a constituted non-profit making organisation with a voluntary management committee of 3 non-related elected members. The team have worked successfully with the group for approximately 20 years and are experienced in encouraging participation and supporting disadvantaged vulnerable people through music. A strong bond of trust has been established between them & the members. Their commitment is evidenced by the fact that they continued to run the group independently following funding cuts in 2009. In the weekly 4 hour session members of the group participate in playing instruments, singing and listening to and encouraging each other. If not feeling up to taking part they still enjoy the social interaction of meeting with friends for tea, biscuits & a chat. We provide a sense of family, support & social interaction for those who may otherwise be socially isolated.

In June 2010 Med3 Music were contacted by Colin Rones, Senior Lecturer in Social Work and Social Pedagogy at the University of Portsmouth to ask if we would be interested in being involved with the 2010 SWIG project.
β€œSWIG is a service user group who have had experience of working, directly or indirectly, with social workers. SWIG works closely with the University of Portsmouth in order to influence and positively contribute towards the education of student social workers. We are committed to inclusive ways of working that are based on principles of fairness, mutual co-operation and respect for diversity. Our aims are to work with students in ways that enable them to understand our experiences and hear our narratives. We believe that our contribution to students' learning will help produce practitioners who have insight and who are committed to best practice.”

After consultation with the band we arranged extra sessions for band member and students to meet up with the objective of capturing the essence of Med3, looking at its history and coming from a strengths based approach.

The final result can be watched at:
