This year, we’re shining a festive spotlight on one of our most valued partners: our incredible Side-by-Side patient representative group.

Side-by-Side brings lived experience, honesty, creativity, and compassion into everything we do.

Their voices help shape projects, challenge assumptions, and ensure improvement truly reflects what matters to patients, families, and communities.

From co-producing ideas to strengthening decision-making, their partnership has made our work richer, braver, and more human. 💙

Six months on… and what a journey it’s been!

Today we came back together to share learning, celebrate achievements, and reflect on the brilliant progress everyone has made. The recap quiz went down an absolute storm and of course, we had to honour our champions! 🏆

Meet Maya, a third-year adult nursing student who spent six weeks with the Academy of Research and Improvement — and discovered that research isn’t about data alone, but about people, their stories and the power of collaboration.

✨ “This placement taught me that improvement isn’t just about data or processes — it’s a mindset. It’s about curiosity, collaboration, and the willingness to say, ‘Let’s try this differently.’”

Through her placement, Maya helped redesign the Academy’s workshop feedback process, worked alongside experienced mentors, and gained a deeper understanding of ethics, patient-centred research, and co-production.

This Christmas, we’re celebrating stories like Maya’s — a reminder that improvement begins with a voice, a question, and a shared commitment to better care.
