Today is World Bipolar Day 💚

Bipolar disorder affects over 1 in 100 people and can involve intense highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). It’s a condition that is often misunderstood — but with the right support, people can and do live full, meaningful lives.

This day is about raising awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging open conversations around mental health.

💡 Did you know?
There is ongoing research here in the UK working to improve treatment options for bipolar depression.

The ASCEnD Trial is a national clinical study exploring whether a combination of existing medications (sertraline and aripiprazole) could be more effective than current standard treatment (quetiapine) in reducing depressive symptoms in people with bipolar disorder.

The study is recruiting adults with bipolar who are currently experiencing depression, with participants supported over a 24-week period.

Research like this is vital in helping improve outcomes, reduce side effects, and give people more options when it comes to managing their mental health.

💬 If you or someone you know is living with bipolar disorder, you’re not alone and support is available.

We’ve been celebrating March for Preceptorship - recognising the impact of our newly qualified workforce and the difference they’re making across our services 💙

As part of this, we’re sharing preceptee-led improvement projects - like this work focused on developing a new welcome pack for young people joining the CAMHS Eating Disorder Team.

The project addressed inconsistencies across services and worked directly with young people to co-design a more accessible, supportive resource for anyone starting treatment - not just those with a specific diagnosis.

The result? A clearer, more engaging welcome pack that helps young people better understand their care and feel more supported from the start.

We recently had an interactive stand at Ryde School, where we asked children and young people some questions about healthcare and research.

From “finding out stuff” and “asking why” to “helping people feel better” and “someone who cares about you,” their words really captured what healthcare and research are all about 💙

We also loved their thoughts on staying healthy; from sport, good food and water, to friends, family, and simply being happy 😊

It’s inspiring to see such curiosity, honesty, and insight from the next generation. Thank you to everyone who took part. You made our day!

This month, we’ve been celebrating March for Preceptorship - recognising the impact of our newly qualified workforce and the difference they’re making across our services 💙

As part of this, we’re sharing preceptee-led improvement projects, starting with a project focused on paediatric physiotherapy initial assessment templates.

The project tackled the lack of a standard template, reducing time spent preparing and writing notes while improving the quality and consistency of documentation. The result? Greater efficiency and improved satisfaction across the team.

🔬 Healthcare Science Week 2026

As Healthcare Science Week comes to a close, we’ve been celebrating the vital contribution of healthcare scientists across the NHS and the important role they play in improving diagnosis, treatment and patient care.

Earlier this week, members of the Academy of Research and Improvement team joined the Science Week event at Ryde Private School on the Isle of Wight. With a stall at the event, they spoke to around 500 students aged 7–18, sharing more about the work of the Academy and the wide range of careers within healthcare science and research.

It was fantastic to see so many young people curious about science and exploring how healthcare scientists contribute to innovation and better health outcomes across the NHS.
