Anyone, disabled and interested in fostering?
We believe fostering is for everyone with the capacity to care, support, and nurture a child, regardless of age or background. To mark Disability History Month (16 Nov-16 Dec), foster carer Paul has shared his experiences of fostering whilst living with a disability.
Paul suffered a stroke at the age of 47, which left him with significant physical challenges. Despite this, Paul and his wife resumed their fostering application, determined to make a difference.
Together, they’ve offered a wide range of fostering arrangements over the past 10 years, including emergency, respite, short term, and long-term care. Currently, they offer short term care for a young person with autism.
Paul said: “Disability can hinder you physically, but it can also show children resilience. Just because something is difficult, doesn’t mean you can’t get on with life.”
Paul, who continues to work as an 111 emergency call operator alongside fostering, has benefited from local training and support from Portsmouth City Council. There are a number of different forms of fostering and people will find one that'll fit around their family and work commitments, including continuing to work full or part-time like Paul and his wife.
