Huge thanks to Pharmacist and Owner of Portsmouth Pharmacy, Meisam, and Trainee Pharmacist, Hassan, for giving their time at our Patient Participation Group meeting yesterday evening at Eastney Health Centre.

They gave us a fascinating insight into the their profession, business and the services offered by pharmacies, as well as the increasingly important role of pharmacists in Primary Care with the ‘Pharmacy First’ initiative.

Thanks also to all those who came to be part of the group – it was great to see some new faces – and we look forward to seeing you at our Coffee Morning in May, and next meeting in June (stay tuned for details or get on the mailing list by asking reception and filling out one of our PPG forms)

Some great tips to stay well during cold weather

Every year more infections become harder to treat because of something called antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Antibiotics have saved millions of lives, but when they’re overused or misused, bacteria can learn to resist them. That means even common infections could become dangerous again.

In 2019, 1.27 million deaths were linked to drug-resistant infections. If we don’t act now, this number could soar to 39 million by 2050.

You can help to reduce the growth of AMR by following these simple rules:

- Don’t take antibiotics for colds and flu – they are not effective against viruses and these will normally pass swiftly on their own.
- Don’t save antibiotics for later – the course will only be effective if you take it as instructed.
- Do follow the advice and guidance of your healthcare professional – for example your pharmacist or GP. They will know the best course of treatment for your particular problem.

We're urging people with cardiovascular disease to get vaccinated against the flu virus.

The flu virus can weaken the respiratory system, which is important for the heart to function properly, and it can directly harm the heart muscle. This means getting the flu can be particularly dangerous for people with cardiovascular disease.
