Karen Warren is an experienced and well established Occupational Therapist specialising in equipment, housing, minor & major environmental adaptations, moving & handling for all client groups. She has worked closely with the Local Authorities throughout Hampshire and Dorset, prescribing appropriate equipment, completing risk assessments and advising on environmental adaptations. In addition to this, she has also worked closely with architects advising on new builds. She has in depth knowledge of telecare equipment enabling clients to be confident living alone in their own home. This can also entail specialist equipment such as apnoea and incontinence alarms. Karen has also completed mobility assessments for applicants applying for the blue badge. Karen aims to empower people with disabilities, so they can achieve their full potential & to enable families to care for their loved ones at home in a safe environment. A comprehensive report of functional needs & abilities with detailed recommendations for adaptations & equipment to increase independence will be provided. Postural management- advice on 24hour positioning in bed, pressure care equipment, recommending specific postural seating and wheelchairs. Minor adaptations - can help to find an experienced builder. Major adaptations - can liaise with architects & builders. Moving & handling - advice on hoisting equipment & training for safe use. Behavioural difficulties such as autism- strategies & equipment to create a safe environment in the home, garden & car. Assessments for Housing Associations - appropriate client rehousing, new-build advice, adaptations. Disabled Facilities Grant - advice on making a referral for a DFG (Government grant for disabled people to adapt the home). Help with finding a new home. Karen has experience working with children, adults and the elderly. All disabilities assessed, from mild mobility problems needing a level-access shower or stair lift, to severe physical disabilities needing wheelchair-accessible facilities, such as through the floor lifts, steplifts and more. Karen held the voluntary role as the Secretary to the South East Regional Committee for the Royal College of Occupational Therapy and British Association of Occupational Therapist. Karen completed minutes at the committee meetings as well as actively take a role in being the network lead for the committee along with another colleague. Every two months a newsletter was provided to the College of Occupational Therapy who disseminates this to all members. Karen has contributed to an article for the Occupational Therapy (OT) News and received support from other committee members, this was published in the July 2016 edition of the OT News, page 48. As a committee they aim to seek opportunities to support the needs of their members.
