❓Have you ever wondered if an underactive thyroid might be impacting your ability to lose weight?

It is something to be considered if you have genuinely tried to lose weight and it’s just not happening. Or you have lost weight initially but now have plateaued.

I am working with a couple of clients right now where we have identified compromised thyroid function. Exploring WHY is what I excel at.

🦋What are the giveaway signs of thyroid problems?

⚡️Fatigue and poor stamina
⚡️Weight gain
⚡️Depression
⚡️Dry skin and hair
⚡️Symptoms of IBS, including bloating, constipation & diarrhoea
⚡️Anxiety, panic attacks, and inability to deal with stress
⚡️Anaemia
⚡️Brain fog (sluggish thinking, forgetfulness, lack of a zest for life)
⚡️Cold and heat intolerance, cold hands and/or feet
⚡️Headaches, migraines, frequent colds or flu, slow recovery from ⚡️infections
⚡️Tenderness, muscle cramps, tired aching muscles
⚡️Sleep disturbances

You don’t need to have all of these symptoms but if you are recognising yourself here, then do think about getting tested. Your GP can do a basic test and I also offer more comprehensive testing privately.

Thyroid issues can be supported nutritionally - eating a nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory diet can certainly help.

🦋It’s also important to look at what is causing the thyroid to become underactive.

👉Adrenal health (that’s your stress response) is very likely linked, as is gut health – especially if testing finds raised antibodies in relation to thyroid health (this is then likely to be Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) an auto-immune condition. (Your GP can diagnose this for you).

👉But again, we need to explore WHY. Do you have a stressful job? Is your homelife not as harmonious as you would like it to be?

👉Do you have digestive issues that are compromising your immune system?

👉What can we do to improve this? What needs supporting?

And thinking about what is happening for you on a more emotional and spiritual level, the thyroid is linked to the throat chakra. So I would be asking what are you not expressing? Is your voice not heard?

Where are you holding this in your body? (Could it be the digestive system, your adrenal glands, or somewhere else?)

⚖️What needs rebalancing or releasing so your thyroid can allow your energy to flow freely and in abundance?

What do YOU need to feel energised and full of life?

Health happens on many levels. A healthy, balanced weight happens on many levels.

I’ve spoken to a couple of ladies about their experiences of the weight loss jabs this week.

The first lady lost 4st but the jabs had stopped working for her.

She wanted to come off them and do the rest more naturally.

She had no instruction on what to eat alongside the jabs to help her lose weight.

There was no help making lasting changes to eating habits, to stop the rebound weight gain.

She was still eating a very high carb diet, had cravings for sweet foods – and was eating the exact same way that saw her gain weight in the first place.

The second lady had lost 2 stone, stopped the jabs and put 1 stone back on.

She was looking for help to stop the inevitable weight rebound.

She had made no changes to her eating habits, because she wasn't instructed to do so.

She couldn’t get cravings under control.

Make no mistake, weight loss happens with these jabs.

But what doesn’t happen is the learning about how our bodies use different foods.

How to rewire our brains to eat healthily. How to feed our bodies and our minds to give us the clarity and determination to eat well.

It doesn’t show you how and what to eat to naturally increase GLP-1.

What both these ladies needed is the space to find out exactly what works for them.

The space to make the odd mistake and learn from it.

To be shown how to connect with what their bodies are telling them.

Lifetime habits, behaviours and emotional patterns around food don’t stop overnight because you have lost weight. Both your weight and your habits need to change, slowly, together.

💥Testing! Testing! 💥As part of my nutritional therapy service I have access to health tests – too many to mention them all, but here is a small selection of the tests I use most often with my clients.

Testing can be useful when it is clear that we need to explore an issue more extensively when food alone isn’t creating the results we are looking for.

Some clients like to see results in black and white as it’s extremely motivating. It can really kick start a more concerted effort to make lasting changes to habits around food that have led to the issues in the first place.

💥Complete Thyroid Panel – one of my favourites, especially when a client is already on thyroxine and is still feeling tired and sluggish and weight isn’t being lost. This panel includes all the markers that your GP doesn’t want to test (because they don’t have a medication to fix the issues raised). It checks for anti-bodies to rule out an auto-immune element, and also T3 and associated nutrients that are required to kick start metabolism. This is a finger prick blood test that can be carried out at home.

💥Adrenal (Stress) Function Profile. Measures cortisol levels throughout the day. Useful if you suffer from anxiety or chronic stress, diabetes, fatigue, poor concentration, food cravings and weight gain (especially around the middle). Testing helps me to support adrenal health as both high and low levels of cortisol tend to create the same issues, so it’s imperative to know where your levels are at so I can recommend the correct protocol and supplements to support you. This is a saliva test that can be carried out at home.

💥Hair Mineral Analysis. This test provides information about toxic metals exposure (eg mercury, lead, aluminium) and essential mineral elements (magnesium, calcium, potassium, selenium, zinc etc). Useful for thinning hair, fatigue, stress, cardiovascular issues, blood sugar issues, depression, bone loss, gut issues, weight loss stall and much more. This test takes a small sample of hair and can be carried out at home.

💥Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis. My most popular test as gut health really is the cornerstone of optimal health. Useful if you have digestive issues like bloating and constipation, IBS, indigestion and acid reflux. It will also give us information regarding your immune system, inflammation, pancreatic status, as well as determining an imbalance in the microbiome, and the presence of pathogens like candida, parasites, h.pylori and pathogenic bacteria. This test requires a small stool sample and can be carried out at home.

💥DUTCH Hormone Test. Fantastic test for determining hormone imbalance in relation to PMS, PCOS, endometriosis and peri-menopause. It tests for oestrogen and progesterone levels alongside cortisol to check adrenal function. Tests detox pathways to check hormones are being safely excreted. Also includes markers for neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin and associated co-factors such as B6 and B12, to get an all-round picture on hormone health for women. This test is a dried urine test that can be carried out at home.

💥Health DNA Testing. One of my favourites and I wish more people did it! As a preventative tool it is excellent. This test is designed to optimise well-being and health by personalising lifestyle, diet and supplement choices to offset nutritional deficits based on specific gene variants. This test establishes the optimal nutrition necessary for good health, longevity and disease risk mitigation. For instance, knowing our APOE gene status can alert us to any increased risk of a dementia diagnosis, and we can start to mitigate that risk with diet and lifestyle choices to optimise our long-term brain health. There are add-on tests for specific health issues – weight, hormones, exercise, dental, mental health etc. This is a blood-spot test that can be carried out at home.

This week is my last week working with Kate and the team at The Nutrition Network UK
I can't believe it's been three years since I started! At that time I was looking for something to work alongside my nutrition practice - it was a slow time for clients after the pandemic and this job came along at just the right time. It's been the support I've needed to get me back to a place where I can stand on my own two feet again. And I think the Network is also in a better place now too 🙂

But with endings come new beginnings! I am excited and a bit apprehensive I must admit, but I am being driven to do this and I have complete trust that I am moving in the right direction.

So, I am now back full time working with clients - nutritional therapy, mindset coaching, helping women with emotional eating, and developing a healthy relationship with food. It's about finding balance in our lives really, and now I pretty much have found that for myself, I am full speed ahead in helping others.
