PLANTAR FASCIA PAIN

What is the Plantar Fascia..?
This is a flat sheet of connective tissue that extends from the heel bone before splitting to attach onto each toe. Its function is to stabilize the arches of the foot.

Inflammation of the plantar fascia can be caused my many things such as over pronation, repetitive or heavy landing on the toes, inappropriate footwear to support high impact exercise, exacerbation of tight plantar flexor muscles.

Treatment will include Rest, Ice Compression and elevation… however, if like most of us you actually have to work for a living, then staying off your feet isn’t an option. This is where regular treatment by a qualified massage therapist can help reduce the tension in the foot and prevent secondary imbalances that will cause further problems along the ‘kinetic chain.’ In other words, to prevent additional muscle strains creeping up your legs.

Book in now for a consultation and treatment plan.

COMMON CYCLING INJURIES...
Lower Back Pain
This is largely caused by the sustained flexed forward position in cycling which can put excessive pressure through the joints and discs of your low back.

Neck Pain and Headaches
This can also be due to a flexed forward cycling posture. This in turn causes your neck to over-extend, especially when you are looking up and around. Long periods of neck extension lead to muscle tightness, joint pain and associated headaches.

Knee Pain
Common causes of knee pain are saddle too low and cleats not optimally positioned. A saddle that is too low means that your knee and leg never straighten out fully. This leads to shortened hamstrings, sustained tension on the knee cap and weakening of the muscle controlling the last 10 degrees of knee extension (vastus medialis). All of these can lead to knee problems including patella mal-tracking, patellar tendonitis and overuse injuries.

Hand and Wrist Pain
Leaning forwards during cycling puts a lot of tension through forearms and hands, which can be exacerbated by gripping too hard and not varying hand position. This can lead to repetitive Strain (RSI) type symptoms with pain and tightness in the wrist, forearm and elbow.

Muscle Strains and Tears
Hamstrings and calf muscles are most commonly injured amongst cyclists. This is because these muscle groups get particularly tight, making them more vulnerable to tears and tendon injuries.

Massage therapy can help alleviate many of these issues as well as recommend stretches, exercises and postural adaptations you might want to try so you'll be holding up traffic on a busy, Sunny Sunday in no time at all ;-)

WORK-RELATED MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS... (MSDs)

You don't need to be doing sport in order to suffer from muscular strains and non-specific aches and pains.

A recent study among hairdressers reveal that nearly half of the hairdressers suffered from knee and foot pain (49.5%), followed by lower back pain (39.8%) and upper back pain (38.8%). The neck pain and shoulder pain were reported by more than 25% hairdressers. The odds of developing neck pain and shoulder pain were significantly higher than control. The female hairdressers were more likely to experience work‐related musculoskeletal disorder than male counterparts.

Hairdressers within the age of 18‐35 years had significantly higher occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders with longer duration of working hours at the workplace. Longer daily work hours (>12 hours) posed significantly higher risk of experiencing MSD for hairdressers.

What can be done for you..? Many MSDs can be treated with simple massage work that doesn't have to be particularly deep or unpleasant. You can be given some basic stretches and rehab exercises to do that will help offset the strain you are under through long hours of standing with your shoulders in a flexed position.

Sadly, I can't do anything about how long it takes to do a set of foils, sorry.

GOLFER'S ELBOW... (Medial epicondylitis)
Typically presents as a weakness in the wrist with associated forearm pain which increases when gripping or resisted flexion. Clients may also suffer from pins & needles affecting the forearm, medial side of the hand and into the fingers. This may be as a result of an impairment of the Ulna nerve.

Treatment is generally straightforward, so if you still want to make that 9.30 Tee-off, book in for a session and you'll be improving that handicap in no time.

I've been teaching massage and Personal Training for over 5 years with one of Northern Ireland's biggest training provider in the fitness sector. Next time you visit a PT or a Massage Therapist, check that their certificates bear the OFQUAL logo. This way you are certain that the qualification is recognised in the UK and beyond, and that they didn't get it at the bottom of a cereal packet. If they are reluctant to show you their qualifications AND their Public Liability insurance, you might be dealing with someone who isn't qualified.

KINESIO TAPING
Kinesio Taping Method is a therapeutic tool utilised by the rehabilitation specialists in all programs (paediatric, geriatric, orthopaedic, neurological, oncology and others) and levels of care (acute care,inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, home care and Day Rehab).

The idea of using elastic tape to mimic the therapist's hands was first presented by Dr Kenzo Kase in the 1970s. Since then it became the modality used in pain management, soft tissue injury, tissues and joints malalignment[1], oedema, and more. Kinesio

Taping Method utilises four types of Kinesio Tex Tapes, each one with specific properties designed to use on fragile skin, sensitive skin or applied with higher tensions.

Kinesio Taping theory is based on the neurophysiological mechanisms and the effect of mechanical stimuli on various systems in the body:
* Central Nervous System (CNS),
* Skin
*Fascia
* Lymphatic and Circulatory Systems

MUSCULAR DRY NEEDLING...
Dry needling technique is a technique done with an accupunture needle. We treat the myofascial pain at the trigger point.

The trigger point is an area of the muscle which is formed by tight and weak fibres without proper blood circulation. This can develop a referred pain in other areas of the body. An active trigger point is painful to the touch, it develops a referred pain and causes muscle spasm.

Effects of the dry needling are:
Improve blood flow in the area
Release the muscle spasm
Remove the referred pain

Conversely, we can also use the needle to illicit a contraction of a muscle, which can encourage the reduction of an adhesion or 'knot.'
