đŞ Iâve heard so many myths and misconceptions about hypnotherapy over the yearsâŚ
Hypnotherapy isnât a belief system, it isnât mystical, and it certainly isnât magic. Itâs grounded in neuroscience and psychology and it works because your brain is capable of change, if you are ready and willing to change.
Here are the most common misunderstandings I hear:
â âItâs a quick fix.â
Hypnotherapy isnât a magic wand. You have to be ready to engage and make changes. Itâs a collaborative process, typically 6-14 sessions on average (sometimes more). Be cautious of anyone promising a one session miracle.
â âItâs mind control.â
No one can control your mind but you. Hypnosis is a completely natural state we drift in and out of every day, like when youâre driving and canât quite remember the journey. In that focused state, we can access the subconscious to process information and strengthen new neural pathways. It feels more like daydreaming and you could open your eyes and walk out at any point (if you wanted to!).
â âThereâs no talking involved.â
Hypnotherapy is still therapy. Itâs part talking therapy, part hypnosis (hence the name đ).
â âIâll be put to sleep or be âout of it.ââ
Youâre not asleep and youâre never out of control. If you feel âfloaty,â itâs simply deep relaxation. Youâre aware, comfortable, and in control the entire time.
â âItâs only for quitting habits.â
While it can absolutely help with habits, most of my clients come for anxiety, low mood, stress, overwhelm, confidence or poor sleep.
There are many types of hypnotherapy, just like there are different types of therapy. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines forward-focused psychotherapy, neuroscience and hypnosis. We focus on helping you move forward, understand how your brain works and learn how to work with it, not against it đŞđ.
