Local veterans honoured with centenary celebrations from Wyre Council

Today Wyre Council had the privilege of hosting a wonderful presentation of thanks for two extraordinary local veterans celebrating their 100th birthdays this year.

Irene and Marjorie local residents, who both served bravely in the Second World War, were joined by friends, family members and other veterans from the Womens Royal Navy and the Blind Veterans at the celebratory reception which took place at Wyre Council’s Civic Centre on Monday 20 March.

Marjorie joined from Croyden in December 1941 and served as a Filing Clerk in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women's branch of the British Army during the Second World War until 1945. Marjorie was mainly based at Didcot and enjoyed the concert parties, being part of the gymnastics team and has remained in contact with all of the friends she made whilst in service.

Irene joined from Preston in December 1941 and served in the Fleet Air Arm of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, popularly and officially known as the ‘Wrens’ until 1945. Irene was mainly based in Machrihansh and Donibristle in Scotland and remembers having to take submarine to get home for leave when there was no other transport to take, at a time when women were not permitted to serve on submarines. The submarine had to stay on the surface for the whole journey because of the Wrens on-board and the believed risk to female health.

Despite the tragedy of the Second World War, both of these remarkable women say that they enjoyed their time in service.

The Mayor of Wyre Councillor Julie Robinson, Wyre Council’s Chief Executive Garry Payne and Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Peter le Marinel were also in attendance and presented Irene and Marjorie with gifts including cakes, framed certificates and a beautiful bouquet of flowers each.

Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Peter le Marinel said at the celebration,

“It is a privilege to honour both Irene and Marjorie with this presentation of thanks, a small gesture of our gratitude for their tremendous effort and contribution to our country and the armed forces. These women have my utmost respect and admiration and it has been wonderful to spend time and share stories with everyone today.”

Leader of Wyre Council Councillor Michael Vincent said,

“We wanted to honour our local veterans Marjorie and Irene and show our appreciation of their remarkable achievement as they reach their centenary year.”

The Mayor of Wyre Julie Robinson added,

“It has been an absolute pleasure to host these special local ladies. Our thanks and well wishes to both Marjorie and Irene, it has been a pleasure to host them and their companions and we hope they have enjoyed the event today.”

Holiday clubs are back in Wyre this Easter

Following the success of the holiday clubs in Wyre last year, Wyre Council is launching a programme of free activities this Easter for children on benefits-related free school meals.

The local holiday clubs are part of the Government’s Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF). Backed by a nationwide investment of up to £220 million, the programme enables children and young people to enjoy fun activities with friends and learn and develop new skills.

A range of clubs across the borough will run from 3 to 14 April and will be free for primary and secondary aged school children who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals.

The sessions include a variety of fun activities alongside a nutritious meal each day. They are a great opportunity for young people to get out and about, get active and meet new friends. There’s plenty to enjoy including Easter arts and crafts, water sports, coding, fun games and more. All eligible children will also receive a free healthy lunch.

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council comments, “The holiday clubs we offered last year were really popular . They are a great opportunity for children on free school meals to take part in a range of activities, as well as enjoy a healthy lunch during the school holidays. We’ve added some new clubs to our programme this year including a coding club for children aged 8 to 14. All the details, including how to book, are on our website, so if your children are eligible, do take a look and enjoy the clubs on offer.”

Details of all the sessions can be found at www.wyre.gov.uk/holidayclub. Places need to be reserved online using a code, which you can get from your child’s school. Paid for places at some clubs may be available for children who are not eligible to attend for free. Please contact the activity provider for more details.

Wyre Council re - signs the Armed Forces Covenant

Wyre Council has pledged its continued support for the armed forces community by re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

The signing was attended by the Mayor of Wyre, Cllr Julie Robinson along with the Leader of the Council, Cllr David Henderson, Councillor Peter Le Marinel Wyre’s Armed Forces Champion, Garry Payne Chief Executive of Wyre Council, Lt Col Edward Fraser, Commanding Officer, Fourth Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and Paul Deacon Wyre’s Armed Forces Officer.

The council originally signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant in 2012 and has upheld the values ever since.

The purpose of the Covenant is to encourage support for the armed forces community working and residing in Wyre, address disadvantages the armed forces community may experience due to their service and recognise the sacrifices made.

For Wyre Council and partner organisations the Covenant presents an opportunity to bring together knowledge, experience and expertise to support the provision of help and advice. It sets out the signatories’ commitment to ensuring those who serve or who have served in the armed forces are treated fairly.

Councillor Peter Le Marinel, a veteran himself, attended the signing and comments, “We are proud to reaffirm our commitment to support the armed forces community and it has been an honour to represent the council here. Since we originally signed this back in 2012 Wyre Council has achieved Bronze and Sliver Defence Employer Recognition Scheme awards. We have armed forces veterans working for the council and staff currently serving in the Reserves. We acknowledge not only the outstanding contribution they make to us as a council, but also to their country.

“The Covenant demonstrates our commitment to staff as an employer and also to the armed forces community who access our services. We thank serving personnel and veterans and pledge to work with our partners to do everything we can to ensure they are not disadvantaged due to their service in any way.

“The Covenant can be signed by businesses, charities, local authorities and public sector organisations. We would encourage other organisations across Wyre to show their support and sign the Covenant and make a commitment to support the armed forces community in Wyre.”

Find out more about the Armed Forces Covenant at www.wyre.gov.uk/ArmedForcesCovenant. Local businesses who would like to sign the Covenant or enrol in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme can also contact the council for advice by emailing paul.deacon@wyre.gov.uk

Celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in Wyre

Wyre Council is excited to announce plans for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations later this year. Whether you are looking to host a street party or join an event there are plenty of ways to mark the occasion.

The celebrations will begin on Wednesday 1 June with the opening of the Through the Decades exhibition at the Jubilee marquee at Wyre Council’s Civic Centre. The Mayor of Wyre will open the exhibition at 3pm which will then be open until 6pm, as well as on Thursday 2 June from 10am to 5pm and Friday 3 June from 10am to 12 noon. The exhibition will span the 70 years of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. Come along and see replicas, scrap books, quizzes and fashion of the eras. You will have an opportunity to guess the objects, play traditional children’s games, make music on old bottles, rummage through button boxes and browse comics, knitting patterns and annuals.

On Thursday 2 June communities from the four corners of the nation and the Commonwealth will come together to light over 1,500 Platinum Jubilee Beacons. Beacons will be lit locally at the Mount in Fleetwood and at Cherestanc Square in Garstang.

There will be plenty to enjoy on the day in the lead up to the beacon lightings. Bring the whole family to the Mount gardens to enjoy free outdoor theatre performances of Alice in Wonderland at 11am, 1pm and 2.30pm. Then, why not head down to the beach, you could even make your own sandcastle palace or treat yourself to a chippy tea before heading back to the Mount for the beacon lighting which starts at 9pm. There will be live music, entertainment and speeches before the lighting of the Beacon at 9.45pm as the sun goes down.

In Garstang celebrations will begin as Garstang Town Crier will deliver the Platinum Jubilee Cry at 2pm. Then in the evening Garstang Town Council is organising entertainment from 7.50pm in Cherestanc Square and will also be lighting a beacon at 9.45pm.

On Friday 3 June, the council is hosting a Terrific Tea Party for some of Wyre’s most isolated residents. Residents from local care homes have been invited, plus the council is working with local NHS services to identify people to invite who wouldn’t normally get the chance to attend such a social occasion. There will be food, fun and music for everyone attending to enjoy. 50 spaces have been reserved to allow people in the community to take part and the council is encouraging local people to nominate a neighbour. If you know someone who has found the last couple of years a challenge, or someone who could use some company to celebrate with, you can put their name forward by emailing artsandevents@wyre.gov.uk. If more than 50 people are nominated a ballot will take place.

Also on Friday 3 June, the family fun continues as the free Alice in Wonderland performances take place at Jean Stansfield Park in Poulton at 11am and 12.30pm and at Cleveleys Plaza at 2.30pm

On Saturday 4 June in Garstang there will be free performances of Alice in Wonderland at Millennium Green at 11am, 1pm and 2.30pm. You can also pack up your picnic and join the Giant Jubilee Picnic at the green from 11am to 3pm. Sit back and enjoy the performances or have a go at some fun family games.

Sunday 5 June is marked nationally as the day for The Big Jubilee Lunch and people are invited to share friendship, food and fun with neighbours as part of the celebrations. A big jubilee lunch can be big or small - street party or picnic, tea and cake or a garden barbeque so get planning with your neighbours and make it an occasion to remember. The council has set up a simplified application process to encourage as many people as possible to get involved. Advice and the street party application form for Wyre can be found at www.wyre.gov.uk/jubilee

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre council comments, “This is an occasion to celebrate! There are so many ways to get involved and we are delighted to be hosting a range of events to bring the community together. If you’re planning a street party we are here to help, just complete our simple application form and we can let you know what you need to do. Similarly if you are hosting an event for the public, let us know – we’d love to promote everything that’s going on across Wyre.”
