☀️With the extreme hot weather forecast for next week I thought this advice would be useful☀️

☀️Do you know the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke?

☀️In this weather it’s important to look out for signs of heat exhaustion in children.

🌡Heat exhaustion is not a medical emergency but the child will need to be cooled down in order to prevent it turning into heatstroke.

🌡Follow the steps above to cool them down.

❗️If they have not recovered within 30 minutes or they begin to feel worse or become unconscious then it could be developing into heatstroke.

❗️If you suspect heatstroke please phone for an ambulance as soon as possible. Cool the child down as quickly as you can using a cold shower, bags of ice on the neck, armpits and groin areas or immerse their whole body in cold water if you can.

❗️If the child goes unconscious get them into the recovery position and monitor their breathing while you wait for help to arrive.

❗️SAVE this post so you have it to refer back to and SHARE it with your parent friends.

🌞It’s getting hotter this week!🌞

Do you have artificial grass in your garden?

It’s really practical for little ones but did you know that in warm weather the temperature of the grass is significantly hotter than natural grass and can cause serious burns to little feet.

🌡The temperatures in this post are taken from an experiment carried out by a veterinary surgery to demonstrate the dangers to animals and it gives an idea of what temperatures you might be looking at on a hot day.

And it’s not just artificial grass.

Swipe to see an image of our trainer Farah from son’s foot after stepping on their garden tiles last summer. Little Sufian’s a runner and he managed to escape out of the back door before she’d had a chance to put his shoes on.

Thankfully he recovered fully but it shows how important it is to be aware of the dangers of surfaces that are in direct sunlight.

Always check the temperature before letting little ones run around outside.

🍃Do you know the best action to take if your child comes into contact with stinging nettles? And is it true that dock leaves really are a cure?

Here’s our guide to dealing with nettle stings:

1 Try not to touch the affected area for 10 minutes. If you can avoid touching the area it will allow it to dry which makes it easier to remove the chemical irritants from the plant. If it is touched or rubbed too soon this could push the chemicals further into the skin making the pain and irritation last for longer.

2 Use soap and water to wash the surface of the skin. If this isn’t possible a clean cloth or wipe can be used instead. In many cases once the area is washed, the pain is significantly reduced or goes away completely.

3 After you have cleaned the area apply tape to the area and then remove it. According to healthline.com this will help to remove any remaining fibres that may be lodged in the skin. A well-stocked first aid kit should contain tape.

4 If the child is still in pain or discomfort apply a cold compress to the area, which should help provide relief.

5 If necessary, speak to a pharmacist or call 111 for advice on what medications you can give your child to reduce pain and itching.

If the child experiences any difficulty breathing or swelling in the face, lips, tongue or airway or shows any other signs of a severe allergic reaction following exposure please dial 999 immediately.

🍃There is no scientific evidence that dock leaves provide relief. However, much like the ‘magic cream’ we put on our children when they hurt themselves (we’ve all done this, right?!) there could be a placebo effect, which might help in the short term. We recommend following the steps above if you can though!

💛Today I had the pleasure of meeting these wonderful ladies at the gorgeous Vicarage Park Community Centre where they learnt some important baby and child first aid skills.
💛The class was fully funded by Street to Scale ,an amazing organisation who fund local projects to bring communities together. If you have an idea of a community project it is well worth looking into them. They will give £1000 to be used as you please, as long as it is a community project.
💛The money has been donated to the amazing JB7 Defibrillator Memory Fund which has been set up and run by Tim Brice Photography to ensure there is a defibrillator at every local grass roots football club in memory of Jordan Banks.
💛A project I'm proud to be involved with and am grateful to Tim for running such an amazing project for local families.

Would you know how to spot and remove a tick?🪳

Ticks are becoming much more common across large parts of England, particularly in woodlands, along woodland edges, on heathland and moorland and in some grassland sites. Their numbers are increasing largely due to the increase in deer numbers.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. It's usually easier to treat if it's diagnosed early.

Many people with early symptoms of Lyme disease develop a circular red skin rash around a tick bite. Swipe right for a picture of the rash.

Most rashes appear within the first 4 weeks but it can appear up to 3 months after being bitten and usually lasts for several weeks.

Not everyone with Lyme disease gets the rash. Some people also have flu-like symptoms in the early stages.

Most tick bites are harmless; only a small number of ticks are infected with the bacteria that cause Lyme disease but it's still important to be aware of ticks and to safely remove them as soon as possible, just in case.

A tick bite can only cause Lyme disease in humans if the tick has already bitten an infected animal.

Ticks that may cause Lyme disease are found all over the UK, but high-risk areas include grassy and wooded areas in southern England and the Scottish Highlands.

They can be hard to spot so it’s a good idea to check children all over for little black dots when you’ve been out and about in the countryside.

A tick remover tool is a great addition to a first aid kit.
