Improving surgical analgesia – nurse-led research driving better outcomes 🧠🐾

Continuing our celebration of the incredible nursing team at Movement Referrals Midlands.

Today, we’re highlighting Beth Peace and her research into femoral nerve block techniques in dogs undergoing orthopaedic surgery.

Beth’s work evaluated two different approaches to femoral nerve blocks and their impact on anaesthetic drug requirements. The findings showed that both techniques provided comparable levels of analgesia, supporting their role within a multimodal pain management strategy.

This kind of research is vital — helping refine analgesia protocols, support safer anaesthesia, and improve patient comfort and outcomes.

It also reflects something we are hugely proud of at Movement: a culture where nurses are not just involved in patient care, but are actively driving clinical research and innovation.

We are committed to supporting continuous education and creating opportunities for veterinary professionals to develop, question, and push the boundaries of what we do.

Outstanding work from Beth 👏🚀

Advancing anaesthesia monitoring – nurse-led research in action 🧠🐾

This is the first of two posts celebrating our incredible nursing team at Movement Referrals Midlands.

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Sophie Horton-Smith and her recent research exploring the use of a Parasympathetic Tone Activity (PTA) monitor in veterinary anaesthesia.

Sophie’s study looked at whether this emerging technology could help improve how we assess nociception in dogs and cats under general anaesthesia — an area that has traditionally relied on indirect and sometimes imperfect measures.

While the study found no statistical difference in analgesic use, it highlighted something just as important: nurses found the technology valuable in supporting real-time clinical decision making and improving confidence in patient monitoring.

That’s what modern veterinary medicine should look like — combining evidence, technology, and clinical expertise to continually refine patient care.At Movement, we are passionate about education, research, and empowering every member of the team to contribute to advancing our profession. Work like this is a perfect example of that in action.

Huge congratulations to Sophie — a brilliant piece of work 👏✨

Today we’re celebrating the heart of our referral practice — our incredible reception team 💙

From the very first phone call to the moment you walk through our doors, our receptionists are there to guide, support, and reassure. They’re the calm voice on the other end of the line, the friendly face in the waiting room, and the ones who help keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

In a referral setting, we know many of our clients are facing stressful, emotional situations with their pets. Our receptionists play a vital role in making those moments a little easier — offering kindness, understanding, and a listening ear when it’s needed most.

They coordinate appointments, communicate with referring vets, support our clinical teams, and most importantly, they look after you as well as your pets.

We truly couldn’t do what we do without them. Thank you for your compassion, dedication, and everything you bring to our practice every single day 🐾

One of our residents at Movement Referrals, Callum Golding, is on his way to the 11th Annual BVNS Symposium 2026 in Edinburgh to present his research on spinal degenerative instability in dogs.

A big thank you to Vet Oracle Teleradiology led by Laurent Garosi and also Ines Carrera for this work, and their razor sharp knowledge and skill. Without this collaboration we couldn’t have done this.

At Movement, we are driven by audit, quality improvement, and transparent reporting of outcomes. We are committed to progressing both orthopaedics and neurology, and this work highlights how collaboration can help improve outcomes in common conditions where published data is still limited.

Wishing Callum the very best as he presents this exciting study 🧠🐾 — this is exactly the kind of work that reflects our focus on clinical excellence and continuous improvement.

Expect to see much more from Callum in the months ahead 🚀

⚽️ Movement Midlands turns one — and this is what we’ve built ⚽️

Over the past year, Movement Midlands has grown into a team of specialists focused on one thing — helping you manage the cases that don’t follow the rules.

To mark that, we’re opening the doors for a small group of vets to spend an afternoon with us at St George’s Park.

Not just CPD — but a chance to hear directly from the people behind Movement.

🗓 Thursday 14th May

You’ll hear from our orthopaedic and neurology team on the cases that challenge all of us in practice:
- Seizure management in the real world
- Elbow disease decision-making
- Anti-NGF therapy — what actually matters clinically
- Gait analysis and tendon injuries
- …and when movement isn’t behaving as it should

This is practical, case-led thinking from specialists who deal with these problems every day.

We’ll start with lunch at 12:30, then move into the afternoon sessions.
🎟 Free to attend (thanks to Zoetis)
⚠️ Limited places — booking essential
⏳ Registration deadline: Wednesday 29th April

If you’ve referred to us before, it’s a chance to meet the team properly.

If you haven’t, it’s a good way to understand how we think.

There’s Movement in veterinary referrals.

🎉🐾 We’re celebrating a very special milestone — Movement Midlands is ONE! 🐾🎉

It’s now been a year since we opened our doors in Uttoxeter, and what an incredible year it has been. Movement itself began three years ago in the North West, with a simple goal: to create specialist veterinary care that we would trust for our own pets ❤️

Over the past 12 months, we’ve had the privilege of caring for so many wonderful patients and supporting their owners through some really important moments. From orthopaedic conditions 🦴 to neurological cases 🧠, it’s been a genuine honour to be part of your pet’s journey.

To all the pet owners who have trusted us with their animals — thank you 🙏
We know how much they mean to you, and we never take that responsibility lightly.

And to the referring vets who work with us 🤝 — thank you for your continued support and collaboration. Working together is what allows us to achieve the best outcomes for every patient.

Our focus remains the same:
✨ Specialist-led care in orthopaedics and neurology
✨ Clear communication and support throughout
✨ A compassionate, patient-first approach

👥 Finally, to our amazing team — this milestone is yours. Your dedication, skill and care make everything we do possible.

We’re so proud of what we’ve built in the Midlands over the past year… and we’re only just getting started 🚀
