Introducing The Bowen Technique
The Bowen technique is one of the newest and most exciting forms of therapeutic bodywork. Making it’s appearance in Australia in the mid 1980’s, the popularity and spread of the Bowen technique has been truly remarkable. The technique is practiced in over 30 countries around the world and taught in more than 20. The technique derives it’s name from Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982), a humble, “self-trained” remedial therapist who called himself an osteopath.
Tom Bowen found that by restoring balance to the tissues of the body, the underlying cause of many health or pain problems could be addressed and the body would be able to heal itself.
How does it work?
Bowen is a soft tissue musculo-skeletal therapy that seeks to address imbalances in the body through releasing tissue tension that is holding the body in pain and in a state of dysfunction. Using subtle but precise moves over muscle/nerve/connective tissue, it releases tightened tissues and stimulates the healing process within the body.
How can it help?
This unique and effective form of holistic body therapy recognises the complex nature of the body and therefore has shown tremendous benefit in helping a wide range of conditions. It can be used to help common musculo-skeletal problems like chronic/acute back pain, neck, arm and shoulder pain as well as hip, knee, ankle and foot problems. It is also commonly used to treat sports injuries, migraine, infant colic, fibromyalgia, ME, digestive problems, respiratory problems, bowel problems and hormonal conditions along with emotional conditions such as depression, stress and anxiety.
The Procedure
A Bowen session is is very relaxing. It consists of a series of targeted moves with the fingers and thumbs over precise areas of the body including muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. These moves are gentle and yet profound and aim to release tightened muscles and restore balance to the body. For example an imbalance in the pelvis can result in pain felt in other areas of the body that may be alleviated by restoring balance to the pelvis. Each treatment is tailored to the individual.
