My Yoga Journey

I first discovered yoga over 25 years ago, when I was introduced to Philippa Graham, an amazing, inspiring teacher, who was practising in Thame, Oxfordshire, and the surrounding villages.

At Philippa’s classes the environment was always warm and welcoming, with a distinct atmosphere of community and respect. She had a beautiful calming voice and a lovely patient, encouraging. demeanour.

I absolutely loved those Friday evenings spent in the presence of Philippa. I was completely hooked! I became very disciplined in recording each class session so that I could replicate it during the week to help evolve my own personal practice.

After six years of yoga practice and working as a P.A. for a Director of a large hotel organisation, my life took another direction. I trained in Complementary Medicine at the Champneys Health Spa (Tring) and the Belmore Centre in Stoke Mandeville, under the guidance of Carol Gilbey. Carol was an intuitive, knowledgeable, inspiring and supportive teacher. I was always in awe of her ability to be able to ascertain the health of clients by discreetly observing and listening, sometimes without even palpating and her feedback was always met with an astonished “yes, that is correct. How could you possibly have known that?” Another amazing lady who played a pivotal role in my journey towards helping and supporting others as best I can.

I qualified in anatomy, physiology and massage, reflexology, aromatherapy and iridology. I later also trained in Indian Head Massage with Narendra Mehta (London), an incredible Osteopath, who was the first to introduce this treatment to the West. I taught massage for Adult Education in various centres in Oxfordshire during that time.

It was whilst practising as a therapist in Princes Risborough that I met Shiv Sharma, an Iyengar Teacher, who was running classes in Amersham and London. It was Shiv, who encouraged me, along with a friend, Deepak Ganguli, to enrol on a yoga teacher training course. Shiv’s teaching was challenging, inspiring, rewarding and transformative. Homework was compulsory!

In March 2017, I met Sam Rao, who runs a Yoga Alliance Teacher Training Course in Wokingham. The style, pace, content, attention to detail and delivery of information was exactly what I was looking for.

As I had suffered with anxiety from an early age, I needed to find an outlet that would help me to confront my fears and worries, so I could live a healthier, happier life. I found that in yoga you become your own teacher/counsellor/coach. Yoga gives me strength, flexibility, confidence, an ability to laugh at my self at times, a sense of peace and calm, and above all else it takes me to a place of comfort deep within where I can be my authentic self. Yoga has been my saviour!

2018 sent me on a new journey and I have just completed a "Foundations in Teaching Mindfulness Meditation" at Yoga Campus. In meditation we are cultivating a capacity for stillness, intimacy and coming into contact with our basic goodness. Breath by breath we work to hold a quality of courage: we connect rather than escape, find liberation instead of reinforcing habit and build generosity instead of resentment.
