Another weekend of challenges and preparation for several teams of potential 10 Tors participants from Mount Kelly.
A yellow weather warning for rain and low temperatures added to the challenges these teams faced.
Some brilliant camp craft skills on the overnight camp and an awesome full moon!
Just a few more training weekends left before the main event in May.

Sunday was another day full of challenging weather and navigation for groups of hopeful 10 Tors participants from Mount Kelly.
The 55 mile team, as well as the other teams, faced some blustery winds, damp mist and short showers and poor visibility thanks to the fog on the higher hills.
Conditions which all add to challenge both the navigation, motivation and moral of any hill walker.
A really great effort by everyone though and it was great to see some really strong team work through the harder legs of the journey. A very strong 55 mile team in the making.

Being able to track both man and animal is a skill which dates back to earliest man.
If you have ever wanted to learn the skills to track either, then this could be the opportunity you have been looking for.
Kyt Lyn Walken Allsopp is a world renowned tracker instructor. She teachers Search and Rescue teams, Police, Special Forces and civilian outdoor instructors across the world. Kyt is well versed in both the skills and the ability to teach them.
Kyt, along with her husband Stacey Allsopp, are bringing the opportunity to begin to learn the art of tracking to Devon. Kyt and Stacey will be running a course in March and a course in May, both will be held at Wilderfox.
If you are looking to learn a new outdoor skill in 2024, this could be it.

A wet and challenging day for a group of hopeful 45 mile team, 10 Tors participants from Mount Kelly in Tavistock.
The weather has included a huge amount of rain fall recently and has saturated the moor which has brought the river levels up significantly.
We decided one river crossing was too dangerous to attempt and so our training walk had to change to ensure everyone’s safety.
A strong wind brought the temperature down too, and it was ideal conditions to bring on hypothermia if anyone got it wrong.
Despite the weather’s best efforts to put us off the team demonstrated and developed their very good skills in navigation, made even harder with some poor visibility earlier in the day.
It was a day which reminded me of an old saying from when I served…
“If it ain’t raining, it ain’t training”.
Well done to all 4 students and all the other teams training for 10 Tors 2024. It was a tough day and you’ve shown you can overcome those weather conditions. Very well done.

A bleak day on the hill today but one which makes you feel alive!
Working today with members of the 55 mile 10 Tors team from Mount Kelly school in Tavistock.
Heavy showers and constant drizzle reinforced with strong winds made a challenging day, however, the whole team smashed all the challenges they faced and have proved they have a massive amount of potential to make a very strong 55mile team for next year’s 10 Tors event!
Very well done to the team and keep working towards your goal, you will smash this!

Sunday was a day on the hill in support of Mount Kelly and their potential 45 and 55 mile 10 Tor teams.
The weather was perfect to spend the day revising and developing navigation skills in preparation for their 10 Tors training process and on to the 10 Tors event in 2024.
Very strong navigation skills across the teams and a huge amount of potential and the makings of brilliant 45 and 55 mile teams!
Thank you to the staff and students at Mount Kelly for letting me part of the training day and I’m looking forward to the next one.

It’s been a really great day getting back outside after a little while focusing on other things. It was great to be working with .kelly supporting a team on the challenging Abbots Way walk!
A challenge starting at Buckfastleigh Abby and following the historic route across Dartmoor, the route was once used by Monks and clergy between Buckfastleigh and Tavistock using stone crosses to navigate by.
A distance of 37KM / 23 Miles with an ascent of 914m (Thank you Dartefacts,
https://dartefacts.co.uk/walk/abbots-way-walk-23-miles/ )
Amazing effort from all in the team and from all the other teams taking part in today’s challenge and thank you for letting me join you on your Adventure

An update on the battle for ‘wild camping’ on Dartmoor.
The court of appeal has ruled FOR wild camping on Dartmoor’s commons.
This is amazing news and it’s great that it has shown that, in this case, a hedge fund manager from London who uses conservation and farming as a cover to keep people off his land to sell game shoots and expensive holiday lets, can not degrade the Dartmoor commons act and stop people enjoying the land which they are entitled to enjoy.

There is always a but and this is my personal view point, I feel that this ruling has now passed the responsibility of protecting and conserving the national park on to the user of the park.
The DNPA and it’s limited number of rangers, both full time and volunteer, is to small an organisation to be able to ensure that wild camping etiquette is followed by all participants. Leave no trace (LTN) is extremely important when wild camping and following the guidance set out by LNT and other organisations such as the DNPA is important to protect our rights so they can not be challenged in future and to also protect what we have now, forever.

I feel it is now imperative for all of us to learn, understand and follow the LTN etiquette and ensure that the common land that has been fought for remains in (and is ever regenerated to) a condition which allows many, many future generations to enjoy our free and open common land.

If you haven’t already, take a look at the news of the court of appeals ruling here,

It’s been a busy Duke of Edinburgh’s award exped’ season this year, lots of travelling and lots of smiling faces.
The latest expedition saw me return to Cadair Idris with two very good teams who faced some very changeable and challenging weather conditions throughout their Hold expedition.
Now it is time for me to reflect, recover and reset in preparation for the Autumn term.
Some of the reflections are testing, some of the lessons hard to swallow and some of the feedback fairly critical, all in my own head space. It’s truly rewarding to work with so many amazing young people and some fantastic staff from a variety of places and often while getting to travel and experience awesome locations too!
A big thank you to everyone I have had the opportunity to work for and with this DofE season.

A really awesome week working for Plymouth College on their activities week.
It’s been a while since I’ve put a boat in the water and it was great to be able to get back in my canoe and to paddle and explore a stretch of the river Dart. So much wildlife and beautiful scenery to see!
I really enjoyed working alongside amazing staff and with some great students too!
A huge thank you to Plymouth college’s outdoor department for allowing me to be part of the week!

So that was June!
It’s been a brilliant kind of chaos full of travel and Adventures!
June was full of lots of Duke of Edinburgh’s award expeditions, from Bronze on Dartmoor and in Torbay to Gold in the Brecon Beacons.
A Learning Outside the Classroom week in Cornwall with year 8 students involving loads of different activities and experiences, and some medical cover work at festivals and fun days.
Happy 1st of July, this month is going to be another busy one and I’m very much looking forward to all the Adventures we are going to share!

Mondays during term time are great! I work to support the delivery of Plymouth College’s outdoor after school club.
This week was my last Monday session for a while though. It was a great session during which a small group of students visited an area close to Burrator reservoir, and built a couple of dens.
The students worked really hard to find a suitable place to build their den, build a den which met a couple of criteria and then showed the rest of the group around in the style of estate agents.
A great session and a big thank you to Plymouth college outdoor department for allowing me to be part of the sessions.

The past few days are a great example of how busy things can get and how many adventures we can get involved in.
On Friday and Saturday Danny supported the delivery of the second of three bronze DofE practice expeditions for Churston Ferrers Grammar School in Torbay.
On Sunday Danny spent the day working with a team from Mount Kelly in Tavistock, developing their navigation skills in preparation for their Bronze DofE expeditions later in the year.
On Monday afternoon Danny has been back at Plymouth College and delivering a weaselling session on Gutter Tor on Dartmoor with a group of year 5 and 6 students for their after school outdoor activities club.
So many young people working towards amazing goals all while experiencing and developing themselves and being amazing people!
It is always an absolute pleasure to work for fantastic schools with fantastic staff and students.

Weaselling - an activity which is so much fun!
Have you ever looked at the gap between two rocks and wondered if you could fit through it or not?
Yesterday a group adventures out to a Tor on Dartmoor to explore and take on a number of challenges finding threads and squeezes and exploring the worlds hidden between the stones.
A beautiful evening on an after school micro adventure!

Another busy week culminating in a couple of days on a Bronze DofE practice expedition. 7 teams of young people further developing their skills and experience in preparation for their qualifying expedition in a few weeks time.
Lots of lessons learnt including the importance of packing rucksacks properly, cooking with a Trangia stove and how much food / the right food is important and why it’s important to stay as a team.
Brilliant efforts from all participants and great to work alongside a great staff team again.
