We hope you had a blast at our first-ever 'Dietitians in Primary Care' event held jointly with Nutricia.

It was a great day of learning, sharing, and networking.

Besides learning what other primary care services did, it was an opportunity to find other dietitians around the area and share best practices, key learnings, and confide in each other!

If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to email us at info@primarycaredietitians.co.uk

We love hearing feedback from patients, both negative and positive. It allows our dietitians to learn and know what works well, and what areas to improve.

Patient success story!🌟

Our dietitians see patients of various health conditions daily, in primary care.

This patient presented with high blood pressure (153/86) and did not want to commence blood pressure medication.

Dietitian Amelia Lye supported her by providing education on dietary advice and lifestyle change, including addressing the stress she was facing.

She has now been discharged from dietitian care, reduced her blood pressure (126/65), and is confident and happy with her progress.

🥳 Thanks, Amelia!

We love hearing how our dietitians make a difference! 🥳❤

Patient testimonials like these inspire us every day. They take the time to share their experience and kind words.

Our dietitians work hard to provide personalised plans, listening and empathizing with patients.

Thanks Riddhi!

Early Onset Type 2 Diabetes (EOT2D) refers to Type 2 diabetes that develops in people under the age of 40. Traditionally, Type 2 Diabetes usually develops in older adults.

EOT2D is associated with a more aggressive progression of diabetes than that of older-onset type 2 diabetes.

It is also linked to premature mortality, poorer maternal outcomes and is more likely to occur in people who are living in deprived areas and from minority ethnic groups. It is becoming increasingly prevalent in England.

NHS England is offering Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) funding for additional reviews for people aged 18-39 with type 2 diabetes.

ICBs must register their interest with their regional diabetes team and submit signed MoUs by 1st August to ensure funding is allocated in late August.

Meet Hillary Siah, Trainee First Contact Dietitian in London!

We encourage shadowing among our dietitians, to learn about how to improve, what can be done better, or what is done well.

These are some of the patients we came across when Suyin went over to shadow dietitians in London:

• Chronic pancreatitis + diabetes, requiring review of symptoms and medications
• Frail, losing weight, prevent further weight loss, and improve muscle
• Pre-diabetes, seeking out prevention and stopping progression
• Experiencing gastro symptoms, and thinks it might be triggered by certain foods

When was the last time you shadowed another dietitian or vice versa?

In July's In-Service Training, our dietitians came together to learn about how to spot the signs of Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency (PEI) in patients presenting in primary care.

PEI occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough digestive enzymes, leading to malabsorption of nutrients and gastro symptoms.

Individuals with type 1 or type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of developing PEI over time. The exact reasons are still being investigated, but high blood glucose levels and neuropathy that can develop in diabetic patients are contributors. Insulin deficiency also negatively impacts the exocrine pancreas.

The symptoms of PEI, including diarrhea, weight loss, and fatty stool, are often mistakenly attributed to poor blood sugar control or diabetic gastroparesis. However, proper testing can identify PEI, which requires enzyme supplementation for treatment.

Do you know how to identify signs of PEI?

One of our dietitians has recently received some amazing feedback from her patient.

It warms our hearts to see the difference that dietitians can make to patient care. ❤️

Recently, the government announced that weight loss jabs ('Wegovy') could be offered by GPs as part of a government drive to increase access to obesity treatments.

There hasn't been any mention of how these patients can be supported during this process, and a lot of focus is placed on medication, almost like its a 'quick fix'.

Is your GP practice ready for the influx of patients requesting these jabs through the NHS?

How can a PCN dietitian help in this situation?
- Require follow-up and monitoring of patients with a dietitian and subsequently, a health coach
- Provide education to patients on side effects and how the drug actually works
- Reiterating that the drug works best alongside diet and lifestyle changes

These weight loss jabs are not straight-forward, support needs to be provided to patients.

It's Dietitian's Week 2023!

The 3 of us dietitians met in 2018 when volunteering for the British Dietetic Association (BDA). We launched Nutribytes in 2020 as a voice for dietitians to share evidence-based resources to the public and other healthcare professionals.

We set up Primary Care Dietitians in 2022, supporting dietitians to work in primary care!

We've grown fast and now have over 40 dietitians working with us, for Primary Care Networks.

We love all things dietetics! ♥️

Our Clinical Lead, Nusrat Kausar , travels around the UK to visit our dietitians and shadow them in clinic. Meet Aveno Noronha, supporting a PCN in London!

Getting someone else to shadow your practice can help you to:
- Find out what you are doing well
- Understand which areas need more attention

Our dietitians can also work with Nusrat and their PCN team to figure out how they can implement changes and improvements, given that every PCN has its own working styles, needs, and resources.

For the rest of the PCD team, shadowing allows us to:
• Learn how our dietitians have been working and embedding in their PCNs, and share best practices with the rest of the team (and you, the wider primary care community!)
• Identify our dietitians' strengths and gather valuable insights (for team tutorials, in-service training, and knowledge-sharing sessions)
• Get a first-hand understanding of the challenges faced by dietitians and PCNs working on the ground
• Meet our teammates in-person

Do you implement shadowing in your PCN?
