✨ What Is a Cholesteatoma? Let’s Break It Down Simply ✨

At EarForYou West Sussex, we meet many people who’ve never heard the word cholesteatoma until a clinician mentions it — and it can sound a bit intimidating. So here’s a friendly, easy explanation.

A cholesteatoma is not a tumour and not cancer. It’s a small growth of skin that ends up in the wrong place inside the ear. Over time, this trapped skin can build up like a tiny ā€œball of debris,ā€ causing problems such as:

- Ongoing or smelly ear discharge
- Hearing loss on one side
- A feeling of pressure or fullness
- Repeated ear infections

It usually happens because of long‑term eustachian tube issues or a hole in the eardrum that allows skin to grow inward where it shouldn’t.

🧠 Why does it matter?
If left untreated, a cholesteatoma can slowly damage the delicate structures of the middle ear. The good news is that it’s treatable — and the earlier it’s spotted, the easier it is to manage.

šŸ‘‚ What should you do if you’re worried?
If you’ve had persistent discharge, hearing changes, or repeated infections in one ear, it’s worth getting checked. A simple examination can help identify what’s going on and guide you to the right care.

At EarForYou West Sussex, we’re here to support you with clear information, gentle assessments, and onward referral if needed. Your ears deserve to feel comfortable, clean, and cared for.

DAY 4 ..... the last day of ear drop experiment
1. Water
2.Olive oil
3.Sodium Bicarbonate
4.Hydrogen Peroxide

I think is fair to say that all the liquid has soften the wax, not 1 has completely dissolved the wax.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions

How well you apply the ear drops will & can affect the effectiveness of the product.

Please note:

- This is a simple, informal experiment carried out using earwax placed in small bottles. It does not reflect what happens inside the ear canal.
- You would never have 5–10 ml of liquid sitting in your ear for days, so the results aren’t a guide to real‑world use but one of interest only
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using any ear drops or ear‑care products.
- If you have symptoms, pain, hearing loss, or concerns about earwax, speak to a qualified health professional for personalised advice.
- If in doubt, get checked by a health professional rather than trying to manage earwax at home.
- This post is for general interest & information only and isn’t a substitute for professional medical guidance.

Day 2 ..... the ear drop experiment continues...

Which one is your go to ear drops?

I'm running a little experiment to see which ear drops best dissolve earwax. I've got four contenders—water, olive oil, sodium bicarbonate, and hydrogen peroxide—all working their magic in tiny bottles with a bit of earwax. Curious to see which one comes out on top! Any early guesses on the winner?

šŸ’˜ Love is in the ear this Valentine’s Day… literally šŸ’˜

At EarForYou West Sussex, we believe nothing says romance quite like being able to actually hear your partner whisper ā€œI love youā€ā€¦ instead of ā€œI love stewā€ or ā€œI love shoesā€ (although, fair enough on the shoes).

šŸ‘‚āœØ This Valentine’s, give your ears a little TLC so you don’t miss a single sweet nothing, cheeky compliment, or passive‑aggressive ā€œDid you put the bins out?ā€.

Whether it’s:
- Hearing your loved one’s laugh again
- Catching every flirty comment
- Or simply avoiding the classic ā€œWHAT?ā€ every 3 seconds…

We’ve got you covered.

ā¤ļø Book your ear wax removal and let love come through loud and clear.
Because nothing ruins romance like subtitles in real life.

🌟 EarForYou West Sussex at Red Oaks Care Home - Barchester Healthcare 🌟

I had such a warm and friendly afternoon at Red Oaks Care Home delivering an Ear Care Workshop. It was a joy spending time with residents and staff — chatting about common ear problems, exploring how our ears work, and sharing simple, effective ways to keep them healthy.

Everyone even had the chance to have an ear check, which sparked plenty of curiosity and great conversations.

A huge thank you to the lovely team and residents at Red Oaks for making the session so welcoming. šŸ’›šŸ‘‚
