You know we are called the Mary How Trust, but do you know why?
We simply wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Mary How, who died at the early age of 46 from bowel cancer. Bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. However this drops significantly as the disease develops. Early detection could have saved Mary’s life.
Mary’s son, Jeremy, explains that “on the night my mother died her GP and my father founded The Mary How Trust, an organisation they hoped would allow the early detection of malignant and other diseases”.
We’re passionate about screening as many people as possible and catching illness at the most treatable stages and have been here to help ever since. 💙

Know your units!

The amount of alcohol in a drink is measured in units. It depends on both how big the drink is and how strong it is.

So the number of units can vary from drink to drink. Strength is measured in Alcohol By Volume (ABV) and it tells you how much of your drink is pure alcohol - the lower the number, the less alcohol there is.

Use this guide to work out how many units are in your drink

We are absolutely delighted to share that our charity shop was announced as one of the winners of this year’s Christmas Magic Displays Competition. A huge thank you to everyone who voted and supported us — your encouragement means so much and helps us continue the work we do in our community.

Over 70 businesses and charities from across Horsham District’s high streets got into the festive spirit, sharing photos of their festive windows and displays so they could take part in the competition.

The public were invited to celebrate their favourite displays by voting via an online gallery webpage or instore visits, with the chance to win fantastic prizes. Over 2,400 shoppers and visitors from across the district and beyond placed their vote.

💚 January is Love Your Liver Month! 💚
Your liver does so much for you —

Filters toxins
It removes harmful substances from your blood (like alcohol, medications and waste products).

Produces bile
Bile helps break down fats so you can digest food properly.

Stores energy
It stores glucose (sugar) and releases it when your body needs fuel.

Regulates cholesterol
Your liver produces, stores and breaks down cholesterol to keep it balanced.

Helps your immune system
It fights infections by removing bacteria from your bloodstream.

Makes important proteins
These proteins help your blood to clot and carry nutrients around your body.

Balances hormones
Your liver helps regulate and metabolise hormones.

Did you know that maintaining a healthy liver can:
✔️ Boost your energy
✔️ Improve digestion
✔️ Support your immune system
✔️ Help your body detox naturally

At The Mary How Trust, we’re here to support your liver health.
Our screenings include:
🩸 Liver function blood tests
🖥️ Ultrasound scans

These simple checks give you valuable insight into your liver’s wellbeing — and can help identify potential concerns early. 💪

🌿 International Mind‑Body Wellness Day — Let’s Learn & Thrive! 🌿

At Mary How Trust, we believe wellness is a balanced connection between mind and body. International Mind‑Body Wellness Day is a perfect opportunity to understand why nurturing both your mental and physical health matters and how simple, actionable practices can make a real difference.

What is Mind‑Body Wellness?
Mind‑body wellness recognises that thoughts, emotions, habits, and physical health aren’t separate — they influence each other and your overall wellbeing. Stress, poor sleep, or unhealthy habits can affect both body and mind, while positive routines support resilience and quality of life.

Ways to Honour Your Mind‑Body Wellness:
✨ Practice mindfulness — take time to breathe, meditate, or reflect to calm your thoughts.

✨ Move joyfully — gentle movement like yoga, walking, dance, or stretching connects body and mind.

✨ Nourish with intention — choose balanced, wholesome foods that fuel both body and brain.

✨ Rest & recharge — quality sleep and breaks throughout the day restore energy and reduce stress.

✨ Connect with nature — fresh air and natural surroundings boost mental clarity and calm.

✨ Engage with others — social connection supports emotional wellbeing and community strength.

Why It Matters:
Wellness isn’t just a “nice‑to‑have” — it’s foundational to health. When we look after both mind and body, we build resilience, improve mood, and strengthen our capacity to cope with challenges.

👉 Take a moment today to honour yourself: try one mindful practice, enjoy movement that feels good, or simply pause, breathe, and reflect.

The Mary How Trust for Cancer Prevention

Mary How was a mother of two young children who died at the age of 46 from bowel cancer. Earlier detection of the disease could have saved her life. The Trust was set up in 1988 in Mary's memory, to offer health screenings to men and women from all walks of life.

Instead of a fixed fee, we invite donations based on your ability to pay. Our service is entirely supported by donations from the men and women who visit us for health screenings, and kind fundraisers and donors in the community.

We’re here to give you the chance of a healthier life.
